I have to at least try :-) Overclocking a Pentium D 830 3.0 GHz

Hi guys, many of you know that I recently got upgraded by HP for free from a P4 HT to a P d 3.0 GHz...now, I would like to know how to overclock it. I've noticed that the PLL # is not in CPUFSB, so I can't do it that way. hmm, it's got an Asustek mainboard, a P5PL-LE to be exact, yet it's nowhere on asus.com, but here's hp's page for it
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&os=228&product=1141251&dlc=en&docname=c00379616
please give me any tips on overclocking it, and no, I've looked in the bios, trust me, i can't do it through there!
thanks

Generally when you buy a complete pc from a manufacturer like hp, dell, ect they have a special bios whithout alot of the normal options, especially the overclocking options like fsb speed.

ive heard of programs that u can use to overclock, but it is VERY dangerous, much more so than using the bios. dont recommend it unless u really kno wut ur doing.

i would just not touch it. ocing a cheap (just a remark on the price, not a judgement on quality or whatever) AMD is not as much of a risk. you fry it and you're not out that much cash. but a p4 d 830? fry that and you are really really really gonna hate yourself in the morning.

Well, yea, but the computer was $1700 bucks, though I did not pay for it (got it free actually), i have overclocked my other HP Pavilion 8575c bout 15 MHz (it's a frickin P3!!) after I blew out all the dust...lol...but that's a different story...
Anyway, any ideas how I could at least try? I won't hold anyone
here
accountable...

they only way to overclock the right way is to do it though bios - overclocking with a program is not really o/c - as it it does not save anything to your bios, so once you reset your comp, you're back to ur old settings - its temporary and very risky !

BUT ! Since you know your motherboard model, and it is good old ASUS, there might be a solution for you after all
What you can do is, download the newest BIOS from ASUS for that motherboard, flash your bios and then all the magic settings will be unlocked - the ones that HP blocked at the first place

lol...oh, please don't make me tell you the whole year long story...lol...omg..
It all started with our family buying an HP media center m1170n with a P4 w/HT, 512 mb of ram, and a 200 gig hd, and setting it up, then trying to use it. Our cd burner died a little while after having it, then the other drive died, then the keyboard (omfg, the mouse didn't die!!!!!), and at that point, we said to HP "we want a new comptuer". The (sorry, this will sound racist) assholes at "support" that I can barely understand just gave me the run around about "You must re-install Window, that is our last option", uggghh, so we called up Corporate support. This is where it got good. The guy told us "ok, i think it's a software problem", we said, "ok, no it isn't", he proceeds to tell us things like "well, the way computers work is that x goes through one thread, and y goes through this thread..." all the while I'm saying "yes, i know that, yes, umm, duh..." (lol) and finally, we reinstall windows for the 3rd time, and at that point he says "if you continue to have problems after this, I'll replace your computer, no questions asked". Needless to say, we had more problems, and this time, different ones!
He replaced it with a Pentium D 830 3.0 GHz, 1024 MB Ram, 300 gig hd, and all that good stuff...lol
And that's the story of the dual-core oddysey haha

since u have a pre built computer then it will be very hard to flash your bios becuase i own a prebuilt compaq and tried to use the bios flash and update utility for my mobo and i was given in error message because hp uses there own locked bios that will not allow you to overclock anything.
Trust me ive tried tons of things to get my AND even back to factory clock settings. My next computer will be difinatley one i build
Besides overclocking is very risky
Ur cpu is already pretty fast

hp m1170n: 1800 dollars
hours with tech support to get upgrade to pentium D due to defects: hours of time
overclocking utility off the web: free
releasing the magic blue smoke from the pentium D: priceless
