DMN ~ did you find the distance to your telco?
that will be the bigest factor in your connect speed.
AOL might be a big factor, too. . . .can you change ISP's?
were you able to stop compression?
I have a partitioned drive just for on-line gaming and the settings I gave you are the ones I use on that drives connection.
with on-line gaming alot of lagging problems have to do with the game video settings more than your connect speed. . .lowering your in-game vid resolutions to 800 x 600 and lowering the visual texuring and effects might help.
also, games have a game.cfg file that you can edit. . .look for a MaxPacketRecieve line and lower it(most send at 1300, try 800), if you can. you'll also find most, if not all, your game settings in that file.[it's not cheating to change settings in that file, either, it's just your preferences]
also, I helps playing on-line at off peak hours ~ lol
Oh, by the way ~ are you running win XP? . . .wasn't sure.

My ISP is just OK so I wouldn't recomend it.I just hate to try another one that might be worse.
Mine blocks ping & tracert so I can't do them.Their plus is the techs are local so I don't have to talk to someone in India.

DMN, If you have not already done so try out all the access numbers that are local to you some are routed differently and may offer a better/ higher connection. Try using other isp access numbers as well.
Even if you do connect at higher speeds keep in mind you may recieve alot of modem errors. When it comes to dial up alot of times Slow is fast, Fast is slow.
Like cholla said if you can, make your own cat5 twisted pair line run it directly from the wall into the comp. That's how I do mine you can find the items you need at radio shack fairly inexpensive.
Do you have a satellite? If so make sure your satt. box is not plugged into another jack in the house

boywonder : Good hint on unplugging the satellite box.This is the receiver box for DISH or Direct TV.If you leave it plugged into a wall jack & your PC is on the same line (not just the same jack) you will get a slowdown & sometimes more disconnects.The only thing it needs to be plugged in for is ordering pay for veiw or accessing your account for customer service .The rest of the time it can be unplugged.Mine is most of the time & I haven't had any problems receiving the channels or gotten a letter from DISH.So that makes at least 2 of us that had a slowdown from the satellite box being plugged in.

DMN, In some cases such as mine by placing 3 commas in the preffix and/or suffix both ie. ( ,,,555-5555,,, ) gives your modem time to make a more reliable/faster connection.

DMN ~ have you looked in your game folder for the game.cfg file?
. . .you might be able to lower the packet size there.
Do you recieve Errors in your Connection Status?
In your Modem Protocal ~ Enable Modem Error Control
and try setting the Modem IRQ Priority tweak.
right click My Computer > Properties > under Hardware Tab
open Device Manager > click on View and Resourses by type
click on Interrupt request (IRQ)
find which IRQ## is assigned to your modem
goto Start > Run type regedit and goto the PriorityControl
branch of local_machine and what ever IRQ## is given to your modem ~
create a new value name dword Irq##Priority
and modify the value data = 1 hexadecimal base
It should end up looking like this with the ## being
the number of your modems IRQ
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
\PriorityControl
Irq##Priority REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
create and add; (while your there)
Win32PrioritySeparation REG_DWORD 0x00000026 (38)
[use hexadecimal base]
this will give more priority to what is in the forefront ~ what you see on the screen.

I have Windows ME so these may not be correct for XP
ROM-DOS : I use this IRQ tweak.I also use these in system.ini:
[386Enh]
COM3IRQ10=230400
COM3IRQ10Buffer=8760
My internal modem is on COM3
I access my system.ini this way :Start\Run\system.ini OK This take you directly to the system.ini notepad instead of the tab in msconfig.I find this is a smoother way to tweak.
These are in my win.ini which I access the same way.
[Ports]
COM3:=230400,n,8,1,x
COM4:=115200,n,8,1,x
COM2:=115200,n,8,1,x
COM1:=115200,n,8,1,x
