Hello - I just began using Earthlink DSL and so far am quite disappointed with the speeds I've been getting.  I wasn't expecting blazing fast speeds because DSL hadn't been available in my area until recently, but I was surprised to see how slowly a lot of web pages were loading, etc.   I had been an Earthlink dial-up customer for almost 9 years, and never had a problem with them - so I would prefer to try to stick with them.  So glad to have found this site and forum, and am hoping that someone might have some ideas or suggestions for me.  My test results are below.  Thanks in advance for reading this and for anyone's help!

::::::::::.. Upload Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 123 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 15 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (server1)
Test Time:: Sun, 19 Feb 2006 21:00:38 GMT-0500
Bottom Line:: 2X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 68.27 sec
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 19.77 % of your hosts average (verizon.net)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-MYEAWC6R3

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 621 Kbps about 0.6 Mbps (tested with 579 kB)
Download Speed is:: 76 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (server1)
Test Time:: Sun, 19 Feb 2006 21:03:28 GMT-0500
Bottom Line:: 11X faster than 56K 1MB download in 13.47 sec
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 13.25 % of your hosts average (verizon.net)

Try a larger test test file, say1496 or 2992.
Have you tried cablenuts or TCP Optimizer?
Is your computer Virus and Spyware free?
Try these sections!

Thank you all for your replies - you folks are the best!

As for Earthlink's advertised speeds, I have their "1.5 Mbps plan" - of which they had advertised, "you can count on connections up to 70 times faster than dial-up."  When I asked one of their customer service reps about the approximate download and upload speeds, he informed me that the download will be around 800 to 1,400 Kbps, and upload will be 256 Kbps.  Do the "connection" figures in the testmy.net test results correspond to these stats, or is this like comparing apples and oranges?

I downloaded CableNuts and TCP Optimizer and have been running various tests tonight.  I must say that I started getting some better results after installing CableNuts... thank you very much for the suggestion, and for the links to other tips, tommie!  Don't know if TCP Optimizer is helping much yet.  My download speeds have dropped slightly after trying that, plus I've experienced a few web browser crashes.  (could be a coinicidence of course.)  I use Firefox and Opera, by the way... never have been a fan of IE.  Upload speed is pretty much holding steady.  For what it's worth, I didn't have an MTU figure before, and TCP Optimizer optimized it to 1,500.

OK, so here are my fastest test results so far:

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 996 Kbps about 1 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)
Download Speed is:: 122 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (server1)
Test Time:: Mon Feb 20 2006 21:08:58 GMT-0500 (Eastern Standard Time)
Bottom Line:: 18X faster than 56K 1MB download in 8.39 sec
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 21.26 % of your hosts average (verizon.net)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-J4HOWYN1B

::::::::::.. Upload Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 358 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 44 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (server1)
Test Time:: Mon Feb 20 2006 21:11:28 GMT-0500 (Eastern Standard Time)
Bottom Line:: 6X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 23.27 sec
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 57.65 % of your hosts average (verizon.net)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-O4K0JQMT8

I'm wondering if my current speeds are actually in line with what the Earthlink rep said to expect?  Maybe this is as good as it's going to get?  It just seems that some sites are still hanging a bit too long... oh, well, I will definitely take this over dial-up!  CableNuts may have given me the difference I needed.  I am most grateful for the advice!  Of course I am still open to any other ideas anyone might come up with...  Smile

Thanks again!

p.s. - Yes, computer is virus & spyware free.

Most people get their advertised if they work on it enough. I actually get about 1030Kbps on a 1000 Kbps cap.
Try this:http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsa2/default.mspx

Took  me three months to get computer the way I wanted it. Keep reading forum. Anytime you can help someone, you will learn more. Great site to optimize computer! Continue trying things. Some things work for some folks, some don't. I like TCP Optimizer, most folks prefer cable-nuts. None of us are wrong or right. Each has different things that work for them. Some surf, some game, some just enjoy playing with computers, and some are working on college OJT, no better place to get it. Enjoy. ;) ;)

Could you loan me about $12,000,it is for sale, for interest I will take you for a ride. angry4 No I own a 1965 mustang fastback with 302. Stock right now, get 20mpg and runs smooth. But I am a speed freak(1/4 mile). Have some saved for project upgrade. Now need time to get started. Would like to push HP from 195 to about 450 and put in an AOD trans. with about 3.50 rear gears to start. Maybe fix a little rust, and get antique tags. Have not driven over 5 miles from home in about 6 years.
Actually I had a mustang close to this once. A 1968 Mustang fastback with a 390 which I swapped out for a long searched out 427 Ford big block souped up to 450 HP. It was sweet, would tease corvettes and Z-28's. Never lost a race back in late 70's and early 80's. Did not know enough about race motors and burned up a couple rod bearings and threw a couple of rod's. Never got it fixed. No money. angry5
And only had $1650 dollars in whole car! Good old days. Try to find one of those motors today!!

tommie - Thanks for latest info.  I am going to continue trying different tweaks & things to see if anything might help boost my speeds any more.  I will check out that microsoft security/tools link... thanks again!

M16 - Yes, I've been doing my speed tests in FF.  Thanks for replying.  Glad to see that your speeds are looking great, in FF and IE!

Those are really good speeds for DSL. I had SBC for a while and was getting about 2/3 of your speed. They said it was as good as it was going to get. So I switched to Earthlink cable's basic package and get this:

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 4959 Kbps about 5 Mbps (tested with 5983 kB)
Download Speed is:: 605 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net  (main)
Test Time:: Sun Feb 26 08:14:05 CST 2006
Bottom Line:: 89X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.69 sec
Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 24.72 % faster than the average for host (mindspring.com)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-1JONC672W

::::::::::.. Upload Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 337 Kbps about 0.3 Mbps (tested with 579 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 41 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net  (server1)
Test Time:: Sun Feb 26 08:21:54 CST 2006
Bottom Line:: 6X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 24.98 sec
Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 36.44 % faster than the average for host (mindspring.com)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-OMI6APV24

Wish my upload was better, but the DL is better than I expected. Oh, and I use a wireless router with 2 other comps on the network at the moment.

NOTE: They really need to update their website as far as advertised speeds go.

philp - Thanks for the info.  It's reassuring to hear that I've been getting good speeds for EL's DSL.

Wow, those are great speeds you're getting with their cable service.

Yeah, you're right about their website needing to be updated with the proper speed info...

Thanks again.

DJVangelis - Nope, it's not you... The Verizon name appears there because they are my telephone company; they ran the DSL circuit to the box outside my house.  I wanted to get the 3/384 plan, but was told by Earthlink that it is not available for my address at this time....
