Why is that is the Bt exchange in your garden?
Mine is at 672mt from me.

Anybody out there is using Bt yahoo 8mb as isp prov?

Never seen anyone in the UK get 8Mb with BT DSL, it is sold on the "UP to 8Mb"
I  just done the BT engineer line test to  my exchange (1.8Km.) and got this
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The speed test has completed on test server test.speedtester.bt.com for user 0208xxxxxxx and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of  1905 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is 217.47.xx.xxx, your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and is running on Windows XP.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

  For 250Kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250Kbps.
  For 500Kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500Kbps.
  For 1000Kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000Kbps.
  For 2000Kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000Kbps.
  For 8000Kbps End Users speeds between 1600 - 8000Kbps

You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click 'disconnect' in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password.

Please note that test results may vary according to varying traffic in the network. If you continue to experience slower throughput when logged in to your ISP, this may be due to a slow internet site or high traffic levels beyond the BT Wholesale Network. Please report this situation to your ISP's helpdesk.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BT is happy to sell me the up to 8Mb service ?
but note the low speed complaint level, below that they will not provide any assistance ,
I loose about 5-10% testing in the USA,
much will depend on distance to exchange, by line length, not straight map distance , also the age and condition,
B.T. are not likely to renew your line unless you are on a business contract

Just bear in mind the "UP TO 8Mb "  means just that , if you get 1650Kbps  evil3 as far as BT is concerned that is acceptable ,  angry5

Hi FiberOptic
I am not on Bt , my Isp is Pipex , but of course it does use the Bt line.
I only posted the line test and info as a few Uk members , have raised the question of why do they not get 8Mb , I was trying to demonstrate that your speed  was dependant on other factors , apart from the sales talk from BT , as they never mention that you could get only 1650Kbps from their  UP to 8Mb service , most new customers do not  have a full line test b4 signing up, the standard sign up test is only to the exchange , and comes from a list of exchanges that have DSL availible,
yes indeed cable is awesome in comparison to DSL

unfortunatly I am unable to get cable, but I dont have the need for speed anyway,
  Regards Roco  UK

The speed that the MaxDSL Rate is worked out is by so many factors....

1. The Distance from your local exchange...
2. The quality of the BT Line.
3. The Quality of the fiber at the Local Exchange.
4. The software and tools at the local exchange.

Oh you can get more than 1650Kbps as i reached 2.2 as you can see from my sig.... and for a quick comparison of BT and Telewest look at my sig..
