I'm looking for a webhost for my friend and would like to hear some opinions. I think virtual server would be fine, but it needs to be able to run a forum, either phpbb or smf. (I told him smf was more secure but he says he's a bit more familiar with phpbb) As I've never payed for a server before, just hosted pages off my connection, what do you do to get a forum working? Do most come with php and mysql installed? Again looking for cheap webhost, don't need much space, easy forum config.

Thanks

After lots of googleing these are my favorites in no real order:
canaca.com
startlogic.com
1and1.com

Are any of those good choices for what I need?

startlogic and canaca suck, 1and1 is good. you really don't need much. you could actually go to godaddy.com and pay $40 for a hole year of hosting and get 5GB of space and 250GB of bandwidth.

and if you do go with godaddy.com make shure you use the promo code digg, it will save you 10% on your order.

Is there anyway to test my speed from these sites to see how fast the pages will be?

Also does anyone have experience with 1and1? Uptime, speeds, customer service etc..

I believe you could probably ping the host, and see which is the fastest...

I trust godaddy a lot, but yea, 1&1 is one of the best ones oout there

if you want to test godaddy go to this mirror http://www.testmy.net/o-mirror-dlewis23-2 if you want to test inthrive.com go here http://www.testmy.net/o-mirror-dlewis23

1and1 they are very good, uptime, speeds are ok, about 5Mbps, (for me at least)

they speeds you will get on those 2 mirros, will depend on your location, for exeample i get about 5Mbps from the godaddy mirror, but ca3le gets just as good if not a better result from that mirror then the testmy.net main mirror.

Thanks for all the input, I'm going to tell my friend about 1and1, they seem like the best overall value.

I run a small hosting business, but i can't compete with some of those deals offered by the above mentioned WebHost providers.  Shocked Some of them are for sure overselling in my opinion. They know most the people who sign up for their packages will not use a 1/4 of the resources that were promised to them. If people started to use all the full resources promised to them by the providers you would see them change this up a bit for sure.

Ohhh it is a gamble, but many webhosting providers do it everyday they offer out more than they really have. I'm not saying all of them do that some of them actually can provide what they advertise, but more of them can not. They plaster 30 GB Transfers, and 10 GB Disk Quotas ect ect, and offer it for a very small price, but i can promise you if you tryed to use all that of which they promised you would get the boot. They would find a way to say you violated the AUP, or TOS.

Really? That sucks... I was thinking of having my friend get 1and1 with 50gig storage so he could have his site on their and I could backup some of my files. So you think if we used all 50, or close they would kick us off their server?
