browser hijacker

Hey to all! I need some assistance; I am working on a friend's computer and almost got everything up and going. However, I am having a persistent problem with pop ups on the screen. The operating system is Windows XP, Service Pack 2. Also there is AVG Antivirus and Zone Alarm Pro (which includes spyware scanner). I have even used hijack this to temporarily solve the problem of the pop ups. I have also installed Opera browser and the pop ups are coming onto both browsers. I have even performed all of the Microsoft updates as needed. Does anyone have any more suggestions as to what I should do? Thanks! Also has anyone heard of a website called
www.amaena.com?
It claims that someone has hacked into my computer.

Did you try to run your AVG in safe mode with networking.
To go in safe mode with networking, just reboot, keep hitting F8 key till you get a screen with several choices, arrow key up to it, and enter, enter, and run. Also while you are there, don't forget to update all AV's and anti spyware while you are there. Sometimes you will get updates that you can not get outside, because virus stops this. ;)

Try this scan:
www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan
For me, it picked up infections that all other apps I tried missed.

(to Non-Windows Users) If you have Linux (i386, Ultrasparc, or even PPC, in fact) should you worry? No; I went there and it did say my system (PPC) wasn't supported =)
(I personally would worry about a IE threat checker that must use the "threat" path to actually test.)
But thats me =)

The Ewido scan is for XP and 2K only.
Linux has its exploits, but they are much different than those of Windows. Check out this site for more info:

Start -> Run -> services.msc
Find Messenger service, double-click it.
Click the Stop button, change the startup type to Disabled, click OK, and exit.
(maybe not the problem, but it is sometimes...)
