Hey all!  I just wanted to know if anyone could help me figure out what is wrong with my laptop. i was doing some scans (virus, spyware, etc.) one day and had to reboot after an update or something(can't really remember). After I reboot the machine Firefox or IE won't open up. Well, actually they do open, but firefox says the connection was reset and the page can't be displayed and IE gives the good old DNS error. I tried both my other PC's and they will display content. Even the laptop apperas to be connected, because I can download updates for programs. I am on XP sp2. I have spyware doctor, norton AV2006, as well as adelphia's security package on it. they were all pretty much up to date and usually found tracking cookies. I have recently seen Spyware killer 2.0 as well as a trojan simply called Trojan-Generic. I am wondering if I could have some kind of virus and If you guys (and gals) could maybe help me figure out how to get it off If I do. Since I can download updates, I have temporarily ruled out the NIC card being bad. Thanks in advance!!   -J

Got to a command prompt (Start-Run-type cmd) type ipconfig and see if you have an ip address. If you don't try ipconfig /renew. If you do, type ipconfig /release wait until you get back to the prompt and type ipconfig /renew again. Maybe this will get ya going. Smile

If it worked before, and now it is not working, Try Unplug your Modem Reset it and Reboot your Computer. Sometimes the Modem looses the DNS address and has to reset.
Check in your Network Connections Folder to see if it is detecting a Connection or not. This can help you zero in on the exact problem.
If your Network Connections is Detecting a Connection but you still cannot connect using your Browser occassionally it's Modem Problem. Once I even had to call my Cable Company and have them Reset the Modem internally. Sometimes the Cable Companies set Security features that identify your exact Machine with that Modem, if the Modem is stolen or used on another Machine it will not work unless you call the Cable Company and tell them you want to use it with another Machine. Not all Cable Companies do this, but some do.

Go through the Set up Internet Connections as if you are doing it from the very beginning. Use the Internet Connections Wizzard. This sometimes can resolve the issues. Then Try Reboot again.
If you try all of this and it still doesn't work, Format Your Hard Drive and start over. Smile
