A new password-stealing Trojan masquerading as an extension to Firefox is on the loose.

Called "FormSpy", it is downloaded to a computer that is already infected with another Trojan horse called "Downloader-AXM", according to McAfee. That Trojan was recently detected in e-mail spam messages. Downloader-AXM contacts servers to download other malicious programs to a computer without a user's knowledge. Once downloaded, FormSpy installs itself as a Firefox extension.

The program appears as the "NumberedLinks 0.9" extension, which would normally would allow a user to navigate links by numbers using the keyboard rather than a mouse. The payload is that FormSpy can transmit information in a Web browser to another website, which could include credit card numbers, passwords and electronic banking pin numbers, according to McAfee. FormSpy can also steal e-mail, ICQ instant messaging service and FTP passwords.

The targeting of Firefox is not coincidental. Microsoft’s rival Internet Explorer browser has reigned in the ability of ActiveX controls to be installed without digitally-signed verification, something that will become standard on the forthcoming IE7. Mozilla is still without that protection, relying on confirmation dialogues.

im pretty sure i didn't get this but if i scan with adaware or spybot will they recognize the trojan?

It was when the initial 75 people in the world were using it. Now that it has a following, it's more fun to the hackers and malware writers to exploit Firefox. If 5% of the PC users in the world were using MS and the rest were using FF, guess who would be calling themselves the "safer browser".  ;)

its still safer then IE6, but now that more and more people are using it your going to see more of this.

on what do you base your claim that it's safer?

i don't thnink any one browser is safer than another, except maybe one that only displays unformatted source of the web page.

ff and ie have different security gaps in different places. that is why the fans can point at one in the other browser and say nyer nyer, we don't have that problem...

It's a marketing ploy. Since less people use it, it can't possibly have as many problems as IE.

I can take or leave FF. I choose to leave it because for me it's slower than IE, especially on speed tests taken on this site.

i used Internet Exploder for so long,i got sick of it.A trojan isn't going to stop me from using firefox

I wouldn't trust Mcaffe for nothing.back when i use to have Mcaffe and knew i had a virus,the program didn 't find it while doing a scan.the AV i use now,Bitdefender picks up alot better.

Considering the subject, I don't suppose that there are many exploits out for IE7 yet, seeing as how it's still in beta.  Firefox is a very stable browser, much more so than is IE6.  I guess only the test of time will determine whether Microsoft has patched up their vulnerabilities with the new release.
