Im trying to get this set up under a $500 budget.

that is a very good cpu - u can pick up a good power supply for about 80 dollars and a motherboard for about a 100 and you are all good - maybe pick up an aftermarket cooler and u should be under 250 shipped

I would go with this method but I would need to grab a motherboard with the DDR2 400 Slots for my 2GB of corsair xms or it will go to waste Sad.  I tried searching for a motherboard that supports DDR2 400 and Core 2 Duo, but to no avail!

Thats good to hear! Pentium D 805 is priced right now on newegg @ $95, so I hope when core 2 duo comes out the price goes down even lower.  Once I get all this stuff would I be able to keep the comp cooled by an outter fan, also?

there will never be one that supports ddr400. its not fast enough for the new processors.

i think asrock makes a board that supports both ddr and ddr2 but its not compatible with core 2 duo

a few people make boards like that. but none of them work with the newer chip set because they dont support DDR.

if i were him i would get a amd 939 pin.  the prices are so cheap now and they are better than the pentium d's and he could use the ram he has now

i have a 3700+ and it is a very good single core cpu. might not have the overclocking cababilites of a single core opteron but overclocks very nicely. the amd dual cores are also nice considering the x2's took a huge price drop but nothing overclocks like a dual core opteron.
