Avast and AVG are good, I like ZoneAlarm for a firewall but I'll probably get disagreement on that

Merch ;Welcome to the forum .This subject has been discussed a lot.Seems Kaspersky is about at the top for best. But it costs.I use AVG & am happy with it .As long as you DLed AVG free then it's no cost.Don't worry about the version you will need to get the newest version ocassionally anyway. It can get a little problematic abut automatic updates & the best way to fix it is just DL a new updated version.Avast worked for me but slowed me down some. For a firewall I use Agnitum Outpost it is a free version also but I think you have to hunt a bit at their site for it. I used Sygate firewall at one time .I don't know if they still have a free version. It just quit working .I did a new dl removed the old one but I never was able to get a Sygate to work again. It's like my OS just rejects it.But it was a good firewall too. I might as well recomend AdAware by Lavasoft for spyware & Spyware Blaster . Some like Spybot S&D also. Since I have Windows ME I also have an antivirus program I can run in DOS. ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/free/ its F-Prot if you need it.

Oh, there is another free one that never seems to get a mention , a regular Backup and you dont have to D/L it ;) otherwise Tommie's list is the same as mine, apart from the firewall , I use Sygate 5.5 version 5.6 had known problems and is now a part of Symantec/Norton, guess it found it's right home sygate 5.5 here http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=sygate along with many other free golden oldies,

OK, a few more and "ccleaner" for your registry. I could name a couple more but that should do. And fit most preferences. Micro Soft Baseline Analyzer 2.0 User Profile Hive Clean up service vcleaner by grisoft Microsoft Updates Could probably go on forever.
And why pay, when the best is FREE? ;)

Stick with what you have best. Yeah, AVG and Avast are great, choose what best fits your taste. Reminder: Anti-virus can't totally detect 100% of all times the viruses in your computer..like in my case I been using THIS free very reliable anti-virus, but when i accidentaly inserted a flash disk in my computer with a virus jaymyka.wen9.com (it is like an edited version of hacked by godzilla virus), it was not able to detect it and the worm (jaymyka.wen9.com,because it replicates itself in my hard disks and other removable devices i plug into my computer) has totally made my computer runs super slow. BTW, desktop.exe and jay.exe are the files that cause this jaymyka.wen9.com worm spread. I had to reformat my pc, because even if i was successful at deleting this worm and destroying its registry keys (for it not to install itself in my system again), there are traces left by it.. Like my hard disk now ask me to use a program just to open it But when the worm is present it works just fine( I mean it opens in a normal way)...

Hi thea! There has been alot of quams about anti-viruses. But at the end of the day it depends on alot of factors. Like what are you dealing with? AVG is very good (among the best) for tackling worms and trojans) and Kerspersky on the other hand is almost perfect for Viruses and Malware. So you need to know what you are dealing with first before hand.
I use AVG and Macafee at home and F-secure at work and they work well without much probos.
So analyze and decide.

That means your running as a limited user. You need a administrator account to get into regedit. find a admin

how about flash media Keeping off the net, is this a joke? Not a good idea... Unless you are pretty stupid person that likes to download cracks, keygen, online game bots, game cracks and one who is often trick to opening unverified email.. Yeah, you are pretty much secure in the path of doom! Doing those thing said above could elevate the risk of being infected by a virus or spyware/malware. Not unless your the feds, nasa, or pentagon's database you would be prone from intrusion (generally speaking) even if you don't use the internet.

out of the free programs i would use comodo firewall and avira antivir. You can get them both on download.com. I use them both and they use little resources. I would use avira just for virus scans, and use comodo's active protection.

kaspersky has the highest ratings bec of its GUI, not because of its scanning abilities. gma7 is famous bec of its advertising and promoting skills, unlike abs-cbn 2, famous for creativity and originality. got the point?
