Ok all you gamers..question!
«

Any of you gamers out there using wireless internet. Im not talking wireless controls, I mean actual wireless internet fed from a tower. A new ISP is coming to my area next week, they claim they do have some latency but are not sure about gaming, he's going to try to find out for me
. I currently have dial up for gaming which bytes but I am leary of wireless without knowing if I can game with it or not. I play games like United Offensive and Call of Duty 1/2 on PC.
Im going to be about 4-5 miles away from the internet tower. I asked the provider if the tower is satellite fed or not, his reply was...
100 Mbps burstable of pure fibre backbone
. I asked avgerage download and upload speeds and his reply to that was
1.5 down, 1 up burstable to 10 duplex
. Not sure what the duplex means, this wireless is new to me. I know it's going to cost about $500 for the module and $100 for instalation so it's alot of money, i'd like to hear some opinions first. (Can't lease equipment either
)
Any help is appreciated

The distance is neglectable in terms of ping, it's really a matter of how clean the signal is and through how much overhead packets must go to reach you. Anything's better than dial-up, unless it's an ISP like DirecWay used to be.

As he said, if it is your only option it will do for gaming, better than dial up anyway. I had one a long while back and played Socom on line alot. It wasnt too bad. Still definitely playable and enjoyable.

Thx for the replies.
Curious, what did the static IP do to make it better for you?

I needed a static ip because of the way the xplornet nat routers work...without the static ip I couldn't even play..or join friends' rooms.

i was just talking to a friend about this yesterday, he works for a bandwidth reseller company, and he said that from the client to tower it is usually <20 ms for about 5 miles or so.
so in games i would images <120ms which isnt bad at all ;]
and for the 10mbit duplex, i believe that means its burtstable to up to 10mbit download/upload speed, which is kinda nice.

yea, that wouldn't be bad..too bad they are charging so much fro the hook up and module, I think that will screw them for getting alot of customers to sign up. I'm gonna hold off a bit and hopefully it will come down in price.

You could always try and get it for a slightly lower price... if it's that outragous I'm sure there's room for bargaining.

Well if your persistent then you'll need to use the right bargaining tools in the right order. 1

I'm currently not satisfied with my wireless provider, I play UT2004 and I can only play at obscure times due to the connection speed. If I'm connected at about 355Kbps game play is acceptable. Attached
below are typical results. Some people are very happy but I guess be cautious of the speed claims and try to get verification... my isp is frontier communications and they promote the service as 2M download.

excellent advice. I have ensured I do not have any bugs or unknown traffic. I guess buyer beware.. I know as many satisfied as unsatisfied with wireless isp... there are a lot of factors.
