Hey all of you server guru's.
I recently installed some software on a computer at work that has been connected directly to the net with just a Motorola modem straight to the PC that's running Win2K.
This PC has had zero problems for 5-6 years hooked up this way with only McAfee ( I know ) protecting it.
This is necessary due to some proprietary hardware we use that needs to connect directly to some remote systems.
Well, a few weeks ago I installed some server software used for synchronizing and updating some new meters we are using.
The next day the PC was virus laden.
After seeing what was there, like the sdbot.exe Trojan, among others, I read that the reason may be the MySQL server running in the background now.
Been having a hell of a time removing the Trojans.
I am going to uninstall all of the software, then remove the viruses (hopefully), then add a router with a firewall.
I am stuck with McAfee (corporate policy), but I can probably install any other security software I want.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent this problem in the future?

Thanks-

wow that sucks.. I am assuming that the system was not on a regular backup schedule?  Firewall will help.. You might want to invest a little more into it if it is a critical system..

No, but there's really no critical data stored on it, it is used to connect to other machines.
