Just for people that don't know the only true way to ever get rid of a virus is to format windows and start over.
The goal of every anti-virus software is not to remove viruses, because it is extreamly hard to get it all and you almost never remove it all, Its there to prevent you from getting a virus.
You don't have to run a virus software if you are smart about what you do on your computer.

Most viruses can be easily and completely removed or disabled.

No most can not, because most now grab other stuff with them, and they copy them selves all over the place on your computer. By the time you get rid of it, it has downloaded other things that you have no clue about.

If It can be removed, it will be removed (the virus I mean)
Format should be the last resort if you can't wipe the virus from your pc...
Format, reinstallation, file restoration takes a lot of time, lol....
3-5 hours for me, considering i have 70+ GB of data alone, not includinrg programs...

I prefer the programs. As long as they are light, no biggie anyway. It only takes the wrong stroke of a finger for a mistake. So why would you bother not havng one. But then again that is how kids are made.

Most viruses can be removed, but alot of times they are active in memory which is why something like ubcd or ubcd4win comes in handy, They can't really be in memory if you don't boot from the drive. At least until you access them and if the anti-virus is correctly designed should not let the actual viral code execute while in a scan.

No thats wrong.. just because you remove something doesn't mean its not there. epically with a virus.
When a virus gets on your PC, the first thing 99% of them do is turn off your firewall, then they go out and grab a few more things with them and put them places, and the real smart viruses like to copy them selves a few times. By this time your virus software is letting you know you got a problem here. The problem is its not telling you what it copied before the virus software noticed it.
The only real way to ever get rid of a virus (because you have no idea what that virus did) is to format windows.
This wouldn't be such a big deal if people would make a ISO of a clean windows install. And didn't keep important stuff on the C drive

The hell to viruses,...
Its one of the two options to deal with viruses:
1. Install deep freeze or install a perfect recovery card....
2. Do a system backup a norton ghost or some better software will do...
Format is a LAST RESORT...

What if every other day, there is a virus in your pc..
You'll tire yourself from formatting again and again..
This is a worst case scenario though...

If you got a virus on your PC every other day, then you got bigger problems, because either you are an idot that likes to open attachments from unknow people, or is really addicted to porn.

If you are smart about what you do on your PC, you don't have to run a virus software.
I haven't run any virus software on any of my PC's for the last 8 months and have not had a single problem.
Problems happen with people get careless.

root kits are very uncommon, they are not something you can just get from anyware. I don't worry about them. 99% of people didn't even know what a root kit was till the sony thing, and now they are all worried about them when they don't have to be.

I think that a significant portion of viruses out there are propagated through email. An effective way to combat this is to use a web-based email service which scans attachments, such as hotmail or gmail.
Also, formatting is not a surefire method, only 99%. Some viruses can survive a format, such as those in the boot partition. One would have to zero a drive in order to be 100% effective....and that is a cumbersome task. Equipping yourself with a strong AV and a good understanding of PC security is the best way to go these days.

That's a good point. Many AVs come with startup protection too, which is a good way to combat viruses which hide in memory.
