I downloaded Irfanview from their website yesterday, (I needed a crappy art program to play with).
After it downloaded my computer was running a little slow and certain functions wouldn't open(My computer, My pictures...) I immediatly ran a scan w/ Pc-cillin, which only found two possible spyware/adware cookies that I removed.
Well I shut my system down only to return later to find that when it booted up it took a little longer to get to the XP login menu, then after that it went to my background image but nothing else loaded.
I opened task manager and tried starting some new tasks using "explorer" or "desktop", this caused my desktop to flash up for a brief second then disapear.
Oddly enough I was able to get firefox to work and still have internet browsing capabilities. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

Run a virus scan. If you have a virus, format and start over, thats the only way to really get rid of it.

yeah run a virus scan. an online one would be trend micro's scan. or just download/install avg free.    if you do have to format and still need " a crappy art program to play with" download GIMP. its free and is way better than irfanview.

See if it happens when you try to boot into safe mode.  If not, disable your startup items.

From Run, type "msconfig" > go to your startup tab, disable everything, apply.  Then reboot in normal mode and run an AV scan.  You can also try a scan while in safe mode for good results.

PC Cillin, hmm.. i suggets using a different computer to scan your infected computer.. and don't use pc cillin..
I recommend Kaperspersky or Norton.. it has a high detection rate for viruses and spywares.. hopes this helps..

Norton? IMHO Its the worst antivirus in the world!! I would rather run a computer w/o an antivirus than install Norton  :haha: :haha:

i agree with using kaspersky but using norton is a big NO NO for me!

   Well, if your running norton, you are running a virus!    LMAO  * ^_^ *        AAr , I always do a scan in safe mode as already stated, that way the infected program ( hopefully ) isn't running, therefore it will not be able to mask , or disguise itself.

Norton A virus?! Howcome?!
I know that norton is a system hog, but a virus.. what do you guys mean by that..

To think about it, i kinda hate Norton because it is notoriously difficult to uninstall..  tickedoff

On the other side, i was before satisfied with Norton..

I'm on AVG now... hehehe
I have used AVAST it has a boot-scan feature that i love.. hehehe  smitten

For me Norton let too much stuff get by and disable Norton itself for me. I lost one computer to Norton. They only sell good drink coasters.  wink

yeah, avg hasn't given me any problems...but when i had nortons...oh man it was virus here, trojan there....i just gave up on it...
