why are you saying the 8600gt isn't worth it?
running dual 512mb 8600gt's
I don't need 2 768's I only do mild gaming, some cs, sniper elite, nitto online racing, and some others, but then there is the movie playback and such. I am still figuring out which vid cards to go with. but I didn't see an issue with the video cards I was looking at.

Since its all done on your processor it doesn't matter which one you get.
Nic's are all just about the same.
DLewis that is what the killer does, it has an onboard processor upto 400 MHz and 64 megs of built in ram to process this information to save the processors from doing so, and it stores the packets it needs for the game on the nic card instead of the hard drives so it doesn't have as much work to do in order to get thing running.
check out the videos on the killernic.com page or on youtube type in killer nic

I know what it does..... But it doesn't make much of a difference for the price. Besides with a quad core processor and 4GB of ram you will have plenty left over for the NIC.
Just use the onboard nic your never going to see the difference.

yeah that's what i figured. I'm just looking at all the options there are.
I've been told that no one needs a quad core cpu, that a dual core 3.0 will run more efficiently and will run circles around a quad core...... Something about windows only using 3.5 gig of ram and you don't need 4 or 6 or 8 gig...........I don't get it lol. Also told me that Asus mobo's aren't really as good as everyone says they are.
I am either thinking about going with the dual core 3.0 and 4 gig ram, or the quad with 4 gig of ram. He also told me that if you're using a bigger monitor(which i am using only a 17 flat right now but hope to get up to at least a 22 wide) that if you run dual gfx cards that the games will run slower, so it's best to go with just 1 good card. ie. 8800gts or gt i forget what he said. I need a gfx card that will accept VGA for the time being. I would like to have hdmi or dvi to conver to hdmi so i can run it around the corner and over to our 40" 1080p lcd samsung.(not really needed but woud be nice for movies) instead of having movies on my 500 GB external and playing them off my laptop onto the TV.
he said he can run crysis and other games on all full bore settings with his 3.0 2 gig ram setup that he has in the shop on display.
I also want to swap out my 2 250GB ide's for 1 or 2 sata's...I'm thinking a 200GB or so for the windows and applications, and then a bigger one for all my movies and pictures and other files that I currently have in my pc right now.
Fill me in guys.
what mobo would you go with, cpu, ram, gfx card....middle of the road 8GB capability for the future if I needed it, gfx card to last and work for anything I would need it for(I'm not a heavy gamer but I enjoy lag free, glitch free gameplay with I do play a game), I do video editing, picture editing, computing, surfing, online playing.ie CS S
COD4,maybe crysis, nitto legends, and others.

Thats not happening. It takes $1800 worth of just graphics cards to get crysis to on full.

That can't be further from the truth. Lots of people need a quad core and more. I have dual Quad core's and I need more. A quad core will always run circles around a dual core processor except for when the app is only threaded for 2 cores or less, which is getting more rare as more people get quad core processors.
thats totally untrue that you don't need 4, 6, or 8GB of ram, it just depends what you are doing. 32bit windows will see 4GB no problem there is no 3.5GB thing. Vista will even use all of the 4GB on just start up because it will dump the entire OS into ram and pull from there when it needs that way everything is super fast.
Who ever told you that asus boards are not as good as everyone says really doesn't know what he or she is talking about because they are always some of the best that you can get. Gigabyte is also right up there with them.

If you do that get a WD raptor load windows and your apps on there, then get like a 500GB drive (they are so cheap now) and put all of your other stuff on there.

dude, i cant research stuff at the moment, but honestly, if you wanted a good computer for what you want....for a budget price limit we could "build" one with links to newegg or something for you. then you tweak it...that seems better than taking a week to get one part sorted out....sound good?

SURE WHAT THE HELL LOL.
wants:
the ability to upgrade to 8 gig ram if needed in future,
gfx card capable of handling almost anything a novice gamer can through at it
I'm thinking quad core
a mobo that will allow for overclocking a lil
i'm thinking a i like that antec nine hundred case(it will keep everything nice and cool)
500w ps?
what gfx i don't know.
or does any of this sound off?

ill answer your second question first....yes some of it sounds off....why do you still want 8gigs of ram? what is to be accomplished besides bragging rights...unless its a server....4 gigs max is way more than enough
and how much overclocking...its a quad core....

I do host files on ftp. but 4 gig is prolly good for now....and 8 gig in case for the future, you never know how things are going to go for the data word man. we have a 2.2 amd with 1 gig in this HP thing here and it was sweet when we first got it and after the last format...but gaming lately sucks donkie doo.(wife don't notice but I do) I can't go more ran on this thing, and it will only accept upto a 2.4 GHz cpu.
and overclocking just if I would need or want to....
not much I don't know lol.
I had a 1.4 in an old pc i over clocked to 1.77 i liked it.haha.

I'm slightly confused why you would even think about getting a "killer NIC" card when you were thinking about purchasing a GeForce 8600 GT card. Anyways, I'd probably recommend the GeForce 8800 GT card because it is by far the most bang for your buck. If your lucky you can find one for $250, but most likely it will be more like $280. Since you getting a 22" monitor I'm sure you'll want a better card than the 8600 GT.

The man is a liar lol. The only thing I've heard that is able to run the game on max settings is a triple SLI setup with 3 Ultras in it and that setup can pull of an average of like 36 fps in Crysis, which in my opinion is the minimum you want before turning the video settings down.

I remember a few comments that claim the 680i and quad cores and overclocking don't really work well together. It can still work (just like the good ol' finicky DFI Ultra-D), but it takes a lot more effort. The P35 chipset is newer and basically superior.
You're also underestimating the power needed from the GPU.
