Diet cola's have aspartame. Stay away if you can keep it up. Really.

Debate over health issues
Wikinews has related news:
Fizzy drinks out of New Zealand schools from 2009The most commonly distributed version of Diet Coke (and majority of beverages using artificial sweeteners) relies on Aspartame, which has been blamed by some scientists and medical professionals for possibly causing serious illnesses (such as cancer, brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma) when consumed in large quantities[2][3]. One of the chemicals produced by aspartame after ingestion is methanol.[4][5] It should be noted that Coca-Cola has now released Diet Coke sweetened with sucralose (also known as Splenda), although it is not as common. See also soft drink controversy.
An article published in The Independent on 27 May 2007 highlights the dangers of sodium benzoate in soft drinks. According to the article, the sodium benzoate combines with the ascorbic acid (vitamin C, E300) in the drink to form benzene, a carcinogen. (See main article: Benzene in soft drinks for more.) Concerning the combination of sodium benzoate and citric acid, The Coca-Cola Company has reformulated its products so that the risk of forming carcinogens inside of soft drinks is eliminated.[citation needed]
Also, the sodium benzoate was found to break down mitochondrial DNA in living yeast cells.[6]

You know you know, so tell,so we know, because we didn't know there was something to know until you said you aint tellin what you know, but you really didn't say you knew anything , just giving the assumption that there's something to know, now you have us all wondering what there is to know. Could it be that we should know what you know , and if we did we would realize that what we know is'nt really what we thought we knew , but what you know, only the part of it that matters is left out. HMMMMMMM???? And now it seems as if you are really tricking us into telling you what you think we know, just to find out if we know the truth, and to see if you are correct ???????

I don't know about any having an appetite stimulant.I think it's a physiological effect & any sweet real or artificial stimulates the appetite.Just something that's hard wired.
Personally I avoid anything with aspertame. If I had to use one it would be the calcium saccharine in limited quantities but none of the sodas use that.I don't know how good or bad Splenda will be time will tell.
I also need to check what tommie gorman posted on sodium benzoate.Since I think it's in a lot of things.
Here's something I found:

sorry for the double post...not really...hahaha
i can't find the original document that i read...recently...but this issue goes way back to the 80's...huge law suits and corporate coverups
but here's a link and there is a link to a paper on a study that was done...
http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/2008/02/12/artificial_sweeteners_lead_to_weight_gain.php
what sequoia was saying lends to what i also say that when u consume an artificail sweetener ur brain thinks it's getting something that it ends up not getting so the crave continues til u eat enough that it's satisfied...which if u never consume that natural sugar...satisfaction will never come...
there...happy now...i spilled my guts
all i know is natural is better than chemical...that's what i know

This is some more I found.
This may explain it better. In effect the artificial sweetener is the appetite stimulant.
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/02/sweeteners.html
This is a site with lots of information on artificial sweeteners.
http://dorway.com/dorwblog/
These are the class actions I found.
Legal class action against aspartame
Those participating in the US should send their case history. Includes all states and we are especially interested at this time with New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. Starting with seizures, brain tumors, and blindness or other eye problems. You can send your case history to be included in a legal class action against aspartame to:
Mrs. Betty Martini, Founder
Mission Possible International
9270 River Club Parkway
Duluth, Georgia 30097
770-242-2599
Bettym19@mindspring.com
The latest lawsuit filed is a $350 million class action filed on September 15, 2004 in United States District Court in San Francisco, California, case no: C 04 3872. This class action racketeering (RICO) lawsuit was filed against the NutraSweet Corporation, American Diabetes Association, Dr. Robert H. Moser and John Does 1-50. Plaintiffs maintain that this lawsuit will prove how deadly the chemical sweetener aspartame is when consumed by humans. The National Justice League filed three other lawsuit’s on April 26, 2004, in three separate California courts. (4)

Because momma in the last few months it appears they have erased what was written in Wiki about the diet coke. I was actually looking for where it said aspartame really was an appetite enhancer. But it no longer appears there now. Or I would have copied and pasted it up there.
^ ^ ^
But you know that with enough digging I found it again.

But how come my aunt lost 50 lbs drinking nothing but Diet Pepsi?? She eats healthy and everything but not all the time and still lost 50 lbs!! no joke. Also thanks Momma T!! I am done drinking pop, it's just we ran out of bottles water which we never do. But we did, and I hate drinking out fridge filtered water, it's dusty!!

Same way I lost 30 lbs in 30 days on a beer diet. Nothing to go with the beer, but I slept good.
In a few weeks I had to start eating I was feeling so weak. So it all has its drawbacks really. Just do it the sensible way you are doing it and you will be just fine. And remember, if you diet with normal food you are more apt to stay on it. But short cuts like liquid diets, who will stay on it once they reach their goal
The reason for a proper diet.
And always remember your viatamins.
