Quote
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The federal government, eager to boost the flagging economy, will start distributing special stimulus payments Monday - four days earlier than expected.

"Beginning Monday, the effects of the stimulus will begin to reach households," President Bush said Friday. "This money is going to help Americans offset the high prices we're seeing at the gas pump and at the grocery store."

The department announced the early arrival of the payments Thursday after saying last month that it would begin sending out the money on May 2.

As of next week, 800,000 tax filers daily will begin to have their checks directly deposited Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. No checks will be distributed Thursday, and 5 million payments will be made Friday.

Most will spend frivolously instead of paying down there debt, so this will do nothing.  What a waste. If they want to do something that will make a measurable difference, why not get rid of the gas tax for a period of time instead of placing worthless dollars in the hands of people that spend money as if they have it.  Stupid, just plain stupid.

I absolutly agree Mudmanc, , and I cant see what a payment of $600 is going to achive , well I guess it would cover a couple of back payments on their mortgage , if not it will be spent on some imported goods ,

some interesting figures quoted in the articale , "those on less than $75,000 will get $600" , wow if thats the case most of the UK would be getting that if we had that scheme , the average wage UK is $51,795, most folk I know get around $40,000 pa
and with petrol at $8.50 a USA gallon it hurts ,our lowest income tax band is 20% and that starts at around $10,000 pa ,
gloomy thoughts , but your problem ain't going away that easy , ($600), hare brained idea IMHO,
BTW , UK house prices are now begining to slide down hill , apart from London ,as thats where the $$$$ can be made ,

Well that $600.00 would cover about 25 % of a months mortgage for me  2funny so forget that !

I do believe that the worth of housing here is still dropping, all the while the rental rates are rising to the sky, give it a couple years, and things will switch back the way they were.  Appraisals were jacked up so high at the end of the bubble anyhow, there just adjusting.

We paying off a credit card with ours, my brother is doing the same. And my mom and dad are buying parts for the bike. So no frivolous spending here.   angel

Now I do believe it will boost the economy, how much tho is anyones guess. Most people I have talked to about it are going to spend it on items that will help out.

Lets just hope that the masses for the most part do the right thing as well. What you are doing is fantasic IMO !

They want us to spend it,  now I think it's obvious I am no economist, but this could only work as a B-12 shot would do, temporary, it can't stop inflation which is what is really killing us.  But it can boost moral.

It really is just consumer crack.  I hate to be so pessimistic about this, I just don't see the overall fortune of a how many billion dollar give away could do much more than be  false hope.

All so very damned true. I also believe it should be in a way that payckeck earners get it, not the ones who barely try. So yeah gas tax would be one hell of a way to do it. Right at the beginning of summer, to get things rolling for all. Now that would be one hell of a boost. And fill everyones pockets. $$$$$$$$$$$ ka-ching

it can't stop inflation which is what is really killing us.

To stop inflation you have to get the value of the dollar up. Which if you have noticed over the past two weeks, It has been making up some ground on the euro, because it seems like fed. rate cuts are going to be coming to end with them probably only doing one more of .25

If they stop making so many rate cuts the value of the dollar will stop going down, and will stabilize, with a slow but steady increase, inflation with stop, price for oil will go down (some) and price of food will go down (which is really killing people)

I'll go with most of that except the oil issue, the reason it's up like this, is because they are betting on oil futures, not what it is, but what they think it will be, so as the summer months approach and heavy travel is expected,  futures look good. Only problem w/ that is this raises costs across the board, due to the demand for any given product that is manufactured or moved, as well as the threat of opecs cutting manufacturing, and the lies of there 90% + working capacity, this  works in negative ways, so were hurting ourselves by betting in this fashion.

opec can go F#@& them selves. They keep saying that, they keep compiling they don't have enough money, yet they have the highest profits ever, and demand is higher then ever. It doesn't make since.

There is no reason why oil should have ever even gotten close to where it is now. And as long as the dollar is weak its going to be like this. Yet, we have so much damn here to lower the price back to a dollar a gallon, but we can't get it, or refine it, because those damn liberal envro. nuts say "oh your going to hurt and kill the animals"

IDK about you all but at this point I don't care if we drill through a F#@&en caribou's head in alaska to get the oil. its there, its ours, lets go get it.

I can go stand on the beach and see the perfect spot to drill for cheap oil yet we can't do it, again because of the F#@&en liberals, But china can, in our own god damn water.

I feel ya there, but take a step back and look at it this way, as you said " it's there, it's ours, ok, then if the S#!t hits the fan, then there we go, you think the powers that be will allow a group of  left wing extreme, ill informed , self righteous socialists soccer moms stand in the way of keeping this country going , if it really hits the fan?   I think not.

Exactly what our enimies would love to see, is us tap that state and burn it up, then we would  solely rely on them. No way no how, not a good time.

BTW the way they have gotten the oil drilling science figured out, the chances of a spill are slim to none.

left wing socialists and soccer moms are standing in the way of keeping this country going. You can't do S#!t anymore here, you have to speak two languages now if you go to some places, you can't saying anything real anymore, border agents are getting arrested and thrown in jail for doing there job. And who do you have to thank, left wing liberals, socialists, and soccer moms who "we're all winners".  And the fat cats in washington have a blind eye too it, going what the F#@& are you talking about, all because they are either in bed with them, or are too scared to say anything about it, because its an election year.

It doesn't quite work like that. Between anwr, the gulf of mexico, and off the east coast of florida, there is enough oil to keep us going for 30 years. Oh and don't forget the oil we lay claim too north of canada. That would be plenty of time for us to get off oil.

Oh S#!t, I almost forgot, they just found another massive oil field in brazil. And guess what we are very friendly with brazil and they don't use oil. Wonder who is going to get to use that.

We could be a 100% oil indpendent from the middle east, china, venizelia, and who ever else we shouldn't be in bed with, if we wanted too, But no we can't go get our own stuff....

Now how F#@&ed up is all that.
