just been trawlling through some old UK records on crime and punishment ,
it's interesting to note it didn't deter folk from committing crime ,and indeed they were violent times ,
but putting it into perspective folks were staving on the streets,

When hanging was too good for some

Stephen Comber, accused in 1850 of "unlawfully laying his hands on a cow with intent",  shocked

(I reckon I would keep quiet about that   I've been framed  the cow led me on  evil6 )

In 1835 John Alberson was indicted for breaking into the Lambeth home of his former employer, stealing coats, trousers, waistcoats and handkerchief, a pair of gloves and a memorandum book.
Found guilty of burglary, he was sentenced to death - at the age of just 13.

caught clipping the edges off silver coins in the 17th Century.
Ann Petty of Holborn turned to this crime after her husband hanged himself. Found guilty, she was sentenced to be drawn on a hurdle to Smithfield and "there to be burnt to death".

Yeah it makes grim reading ,

strange old ways of execution in the UK
the axe for aristocracy
hanging for the guys
burning for females , as it was though indecent to hang women in the air
for minor offences flogging across the back for guys and women ,
tied to a frame and stripped to the waist ,
flogging a shapely female made big money for the jailer , he sold tickets to the rich perv's,  :evil2:so maybe times have changed for the better , although there is now  a strong call in the UK to bring back hanging ,
I think you still have the death penalty in the USA ? ,
we found by abolishing it the murder rate didn't change ,

it just seems to me any punishment doesn't deter crime , is it a gene thing , I think not as we exported all our criminals to Australia back in the 18 century , and now it is a great country , so what makes a criminal, ? , are we all criminals that just lack the courage or opportunity ?

In Texas we use the Death Penalty & actually lead the USA in executions. Now we use lethal injection, before that the electric chair before that hanging.
I like the Southwest Native Americam method :4 stakes driven into the ground one hand or foot attached to each with wet rawhide. As this dried it streched the person. Then left there till dead. Some speed up the execution by doing it over an ant hill.
I think Europe & the UK draw & quartered  criminals at one time.
