http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Windows-XP-SP3,5334.html
although I don't use auto updates , I just wait for the smoke to clear , then grab the latest SP, I kinda have faith in my router , software fire wall and antivirus etc, and had no problems doing it that way ,
BTW,My very humble (laughable  AMD 2.5 GHzs o/c to 2.8GHz
barton chip , has had  no problem with the official  SP 3 update ,

there are 2 issues known so far.

one pertains to certain hp machines with amd procs. hp uses a generic image on install that uses a powermanagement driver for intel chips on amd as well. after sp3 the machine does not boot cleanly. can be fixed in safe mode or recovery console.

the other issues is specific to one asus mobo. if the error occurs a usb key inserted before boot will solve the issue.

Can you change the topic? This is not AMD's fault.

I had problems on my laptop. After the first initial install it rebooted and to finish the install i got the BSoD error saying something about a bitmap.exe not found. So rebooted and keep doing it over, and over again.  I couldn't even access safe mode. It left me to do a fresh install of xp. my laptop is running a Intel Pentium  M

I had no problem at all with SP3. I didn't use MS Update, I down loaded and installed the stand alone from MS. cool

well, since vista and xp are slightly different i doubt it's the exact same problem. however, it couild be something related. hit up the microsoft knowledge base to see if they have something to say about it. and if you are using the machine to post this, it /is/ different, because the problems with xp prevented it from booting /at all/. but hey, if it's an asus board, stick an usb key in to see what happens.

the problem is, i don't have the bootable USB. I have created a bootable disc for restore. But the problem is, after installing the SP1 for Vista, all my restore point was gone except for the time the SP1 was installed.

After restoring the to the point where the SP1 was about to install, I stopped the update but then, some of my programs especially my bitdefender quit responding and I had to reinstall it again. I am not sure if some of my programs were affected since I haven't checked all of them yet.

no, the solution with xp sp3 is just putting /any/ memory stick into a usb port. just the presence of one solves the roblem with that specific cpu/mobo combo. but it probably is something different with vista anyhoe.

secondly, the fact that you interrupted the install, had apps die, and then restartet it might mean that the install is borked now, and your problem is specific to your box and unrelated to any more common issue.

well too bad for me. coz when I bought this xp, it didn't come with vista installation. it's from HP and the discs that comes with it are the AOL advertisement disc and the upgrade disc of Vista which I can do it online.

Well does XP SP3 really  kill SP2? Thats all that mainly matters The only problem I kept having with SP3 was the beta versions with the IE errors kept shutting down IE every time I open it.  I don't know about anyone else but a SP3 beta version was far worse compared to a current Firefox 3 Beta which is about to go to RC1 in about a week.

sp3 has nothing to do with ie really.

besides being the cumulative collection of patches since sp2 it has a few other changes (afaik nothing that the user will even see) to the os.

firefox is a standalone browser while ie is a browser integral with the os. even when using firefox windows still uses a lot of the ie mechanisms internally. making firfox rather pointles imnsho.

When I installed SP3 it didn't affect IE6 at all.
