- Schools, hospitals flattened; roads destroyed

"Not one minute can be wasted. One minute, one second could mean a child's life," - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, a geologist by training.

"Time is life. Make fighting the earthquake and rescue work the current top task," - official announcement from Communist Party Standing Committee.

"We had just finished lunch and were getting ready to go back to class. As soon as I left the building, everything started shaking. I don't know how many of my friends are alive," - Zhang Zhiyin, a student in Dujiangyan.

"We can't do anything any more about the immediate deaths from the quake. Exposure is the most serious problem now because it can get really cold at night," - Lo Winglok, a doctor.

"China can react at these moments with impressive speed. They can concentrate resources and attention in a way few governments can," - Wyndham James, China country chief for Save the Children Charity.

 There are terrible things going on in china, and the region. Look at the foot and mouth issues there having.

 But this is really bad, and there are thousands dead, the rainy season begins as well, this will make matters much worse.
