This may have come up before, but i can't find it.

I have to quit smoking, for good! I have pneumonia something awful right now, never in my life had any lung problems, or those kind of health issues to speak of. I'm just ashamed that I can't do this on my own, and I turn to  be a guini pig for the drug makers outfits. Doc said when we get this thing cleared up, then I can go on chantix.

I am asking those of you that have tried , successfully or not, your input. I've read so many forums, about this and that, and all the issues people have and don't have as well.

All it took for me was focus. I wanted to live to see my grandkids, and to see these two angels grown. One day I ran out and that was the day I quit. I never bught anymore, and never will again. I never said it was easy, I had to keep reminding myself why I was doing it, and a few times I almost regressed for sure, but i had to stay focused. And yes 1 1/2 later or so its been well worth it.

That take this crap I knew was not gonna work, I did not want to be de[pendant on anything that could backfire. (I'm out of patches, etc.... ) So for me it was cold turkey as so many before the drug replacements. By the way I saw no way to replace nicotene with nicotene, I figured whu not just quit. And it was not because of cost, the V/A would have covered the costs. It was a preference for me.

The End.  azn

Again, good luck. If you need to chat, you know where to find me bro. Thats what I'm here for, and cocknuk went through it too about the same time. But not togather, just silly timing really.

If it helps, keep a soggy nasty ashtray aroyund to sniff once in a while, thats what your breathe is like.  Wink I do not miss it anymore.

It took about a year to finally quit the urges for good.

I know Tommie quit before me and I haven't smoked for a year and a half now and don't want to! Like Tommie it ain't easy but  if its necessary you'll quit. If you need some one to talk to give me a call anytime day or night. I have COPD & Asthma with emphysema. Smoking is not an option with me.

I have to admit I'm bad w/ it, I smoke the same cigarette as many as four to five times, just keep re-lighting it. I quit before for a year. Two separate times. A couple months ago ,I quit for about thirty days.  I chew the gum when I go places I can't smoke.

Just wondered if any one has used chantix. It blocks the nicotine receptors in your brain.

The hardest part for me was when I was drinking. Smoking and drinking just went hand in hand ..... no pun intended.  Wink

I was a pack-pack and a half a day smoker and more than that when I was at a party. A little over 15 years like that and then I caught a bad cold and couldn't even think about cigarettes without coughing. I smoked my last one on January 8, 1999 and I don't miss them. I know the exact date because it was the day after my birthday. Happy birthday to me!!  Happy Birthday!

Being sick will help (in a weird way) because you probably can't smoke right now anyway. So get rid of what you have now and don't buy anymore. Besides, with cigarette prices these days, you can only bum from your friends for so long.  evil6

Thanks for the thoughts people. Smile

I just got back from the doc, and he said the results are normal, he also said, why do you sound so good right now ? I was sitting in the office for 20 minutes or so  AIR CONDITIONED.   I nearly cleared up 100%. He gave me a shot of cortisone, ( needed it anyway I guess ), and an inhaler. Told me to keep takin the antibiotics anyway.

Thing is, I have air at the house, which is my office as well, but we only use it when it gets really hot and humid. We like the fresh air.  I'm sitting here putting together a system, and I feel like S#!t ! can't breath for a damn. I guess it doesn't take to much to figure I have to use the air, I just don't want to be dependent on it.

AAR , thaks for listen to my rants and issues.  Rolling Eyes I'm goin back next week, then I'll get the chantix, I hate smokin anyway. it's embarrassing to me anymore.

mudmanc4 ;I have always been told by people that actually quit & stayed quit that cold turkey was the way they did it.

On the AC .Try running yours most of the time for a couple of days& nights to see if you clear up like at the doctors office. Then you will know if it is the cold temp or something else.
If you stay the same at home with the air on & you still are having problems then it would have to be something else.Like the doctors office may have a HEPA air filter &  many of those also Ionize the air.So you could ask your doctor if his office uses something like that.
The reason I say that is the fresh air you enjoy may contain alergins you are alergic to .
All refrigerterated air has filters of some kind.or is supposed to.
Also the air conditioning system can contain it's own "dirt" they have steam out services for the ducts .It's possible you need to have that done.
Even with filters the Fan(squirel  cage on most) may have a lot more dirt on it that you think.I just helped a friend change the motor in his & you wouldn't believe how dirty the fan was.I don't think anything but removing it & brushing & blowing it with an air hose on a good air compresser would have cleaned it .Then soap & hot water,
So just a couple of ideas there.

 Thanks sequoia.

I turned the AC on after my last post, still coolin off lol.  The house is 10 years old, (the people that owned it before only stayed here for two months out of the year ) and when I moved in almost 5 years ago I had the ducts cleaned, and the entire system (other than the ductwork ) was replaced that month w/ a Lennox 90 + efficient.  I had a UV light air cleaner installed because of the wife and youngest boy. I pitched the electronic filter because there junk IMO. Each time there is an arc, it creates a hole in the media.

I see more cottonwood this year than I have ever in my life, it's surreal, although i don't sneeze or have any cold or allergy symptoms, I guess maybe as the doc said, it all depends on how the winter went. Whatever lol.

mudmanc4 ; Here I can use an evaporative AC most days.So I just have a couple of refrigerated window units that I use when necessary.
The home air filter I use is simpler.(Not the one for the central heater). It a Sunbeam the HEPA filter in it looks like a large automotive one;It has a foam rubber carbon impregnated filter wrapped around it.It say it has an Ionizer when I pusth the button to run the Ionizer also it makes the air smell like rain so I guess it does something.I vac the filter every couple of weeks & it always has a visible layer of dust & some pet hair on it. So it at least removes that.I've never had one with the UV light.
Interestingly enough the water place where I get my drinking water because our tap water is very salty.I happen to catch the service man & he gave me a tour .One of the things it does to the water in exposer it to UV light. Also 7 other filtering processes .It tastes a lot better that our tap water does even if it is the same water just filtered & not bad for 25 cents a gallon.

I only have the central air.  I was thinking of getting one of those filters your talking about, but there are so many , and you never know which ones are for real you know?  Which one do you have ?

Oh yeah, we have a 125' deep well, our water is good, but hey, it's well water, so I had a RO system put in when we moved here as well.

Hey Mudmance Bro , get well soon , I am just into the first month or so of quiting ,
OK I failed once , in that time but I was under unbelievable stress and it was a free cigar !
and like Starship , tdawnaz's
you can call me as well anytime...i'm gonna look up my personal system and pm it to ya...worked for me may or may not for u...i sent it to someone else on here...i don't think they used it...color]
no I didn't use all  that system , but she sowed the seed in my mind , I knew I had to do it my way , so from me still in the early days , thanks Tdawnaz  smitten for the care and support , and also to TMN forum for listening to my winging ,
hey,  giving up nicotine is harder than giving up opium  , so a military nurse told me ,
it ain't easy , well it hasn't been for me ,  and accounts for my lack of input into the forum , I just had some very bleak days , when even the forum wasn't my friend , so I stooped posting, as I felt like ripping everbodies head off , it passes given time , and you begin to come out of the other side ,

BTW, I was buying a pack a day , and have beeing so for many years than I wish to remember , at a UK cost of $11 USD a day ,   shocked,
wel,OK health wise it wasn't a problem , as I had passed a deep sea divers medical just a few years back , but for me it all came down to cost , $4,015.USD  a year , and I was bitching about petrol costs and running a single core 2.8b MHz puter,
just my weak input on this , just living day to day on the no smoking ,

but if you need , PM me at any time , lol at times I need the suport also ,

your reply was kinda spooky , coz I felt I was the only one that felt that way ,
so I am  not alone on that Bro,  Thx

mudmanc4 ;I have central heat but all my AC is window units.1 evaporative & 2 refridgerated.
My HEPA air cleaner is a Sunbeam model 2543 but it is several years old & this model is no longer made.I don't know if they make a newer equivalent.I have hundreds of hours on this one & no sign of failure yet.
I wish I did have well water like you.The well water we have here is good but somewhat high in fluoride. This can cause tooth mottling but no real harmful effect. In the city you have to get a permit to drill a well & it is illegal to hook up to your house water or drink. The city does add well water to the salty lake reservoir water to make it barely meet state standards.
We have had a drought the last 4 years & the reservoir that was a 105 feet depth is now 46 feet.So they are adding more well water.I do drink some of this as it contains a lot of minerals mostly in cooking & coffee.
I don't have a home water filter .I buy mine from a company here that puts up small buildings that are coin operated & you can buy the filtered water for a 25 cents a gallon.Like I said I got a tour from a service tech that was there one time I was getting water.I'm sure the filter system they use would be several thousand dollars to build & costly to operate for a home.It even monitors it's own tank water & if it detects anything wrong with the water like something that should have been filtered out it shuts itself down & calls the service tech. They are cleaned daily & well serviced. You may not even see this type of service if your area has good water. But these are a long way above the self service units you see at Walmart.

I quit cold turkey 5 years ago anlong with my wife and save over $400.00 a month! After 4 days of not smoking the way I felt physically was so much better that I didn't even give it another thought. I went from 3 packs of cigs a day. to 2 boxes of Cheroots and inhaled every bit of every cigar I smoked before I quit. I also got a bad cold and couldn't stop coughing especially in bed at night. I feel for ya man it's the worst. Especially if you like to smoke! Anyway, the best of luck in your endeavor, and give some thought to just not doing it anymore, without the placebo's and what not. What a feeling of pure control you'll get.

yeh control...powerup...i'm an admitted control freak so i couldn't have that S#!t controlling me...

when i tried once to quit...and i holed up in my room for a whole weekend bawling my eyes out...and realized it was because of the hold it had on me...i thought that was enough...but then this last time i gave my car keys to my kids and told them they would have to run my errands that weekend...so one nite i called my son and told him i was out of milk and would he bring me some...he said sure...and i told him to bring me a hlf a cig too...he was strong for me tho he told me no way...and he didn't...despite the threats i made...like "well fine then i'm just gonna go up and buy a whole pack..." he said fine...but that he'd be over in a bit with my milk...hahaha...i got off the phone...and was so mad at myself for the way i acted...temper tantrum...i felt like a junkie...that was all i needed to empower me...nothing but nothing wil have that kind of control over me...nothing...

a couple weeks in when all that crap started moving out of my lungs...i got soooooo sick...every cell in my body hurt...and i was coughing up the nastiest evit S#!t ever...

then further down the road a coworker leaned in to me and whispered "u smell so good now" and jokingly i said "what did i stink before?" and he said..."well yes..." i still thank him for that because that just sealed the deal for me...

i love being smoke free...uncontrolled

i know i've damaged my body...maybe someday it will heal completely...or at least maybe my grkids will be smart enough not to abuse themselves the way i did...

I know how bad it stinks, because every time I quit, I can't stand the smell of some ones smoky ass breath, nasty, just bad.

I do like to smoke, but hell, I've quit worse, or should I say better.   :haha:

2nd post  :lol:Ooops previous post , old english joke ,
back on topic , would I date a smoker ? probably not , Hell who wants to kiss a ashtray ?,  the one thing I used to my advantage on quiting smoking , as often I could not smoke for 8 hours plus (work ) was the strange light headed feeling I got , it wasn't exactly pleasent just a strange spaced out feeling ,  so I grew my thoughts on that, and tried to make full use of that feeling , and yes I shut myself away for a week , spent a lot of time just sleeping , planning future projects and thinking back to before I smoked ,
and finaly accepted I was a addict  to a expencive habit (UK ) , once that reality had finaly set in  things got easier and ,after a lot of other  changes in my life ,and suport from good friends,
