U will only see the 54 mbs increase when transferring files from one computer to the other
internet will depend on your ISP speed not your routers

Please post your ISP package, what OS your using, and the basic PC specks. Yes you should be getting much more then that, wireless or not. You may have settings incorrect in your router, and or the machine.

When you say " linksys g range router " that doesn't mean much to me, please post the router model number.

I am unsure of your lingo but its just a normal modem router setup, internet through modem than to internet port on router by cat .5 cable, than to home computer using another .5 cable.

poe ( Power Over Ethernet ) Is the bridge ( wireless router ) plugged in to a power source, or is it plugged in w/ the ethernet cable ?

How new is your laptop, does it have wireless "N " capabilities ? I guess I'm just curious why you opted for the "g ".

there could be some settings that i might need to change, although i am not to familiar with doing so. the router is also a cheap version of the N router, even though my labby doesn't get n. I changed the router settings to G only. What else does one normally do to configure the router.

" N " routers are normally backwards compatible, I would not set anything to " only " . Not likely, but that could be one of your problems. You might want to check and see what the network settings are as far as " full /half duplex " .
