I've been changing out old lights and going CFL's. Shopping around had me puzzled but for the best lighting in my shops I found using the one's marked "Daylite" were best and use the Kelvin rating of 5,000 and higher.
I also got some dursturbing information

I don't get tired of watching that and I think we need to start writing our congress people about this.
Think about it, whats next ? They are telling you which products you can use ? Next you can't use oil to cook an egg or you'll be placed on rations, hell, the government has had quite a bit of practice w/ handing out food ration cards for some time now, it wouldn't take much to propose any penalty.

wow...my house is full of those...i knew that u had to be really careful with them cuz they contained a harmful gas...but wow this is scarey...wonder if they ever explode...and they're ALL made in china?? WHY?? my cupboard is full of them too...cuz i got a deal at home depot...double instant rebate from my energy company and home depot. and each package said i would save $46 per bulb per year...and 4 bulbs per package that's $184 and with the rebates they cost less than $3 per package so i bought 15 packages i've used 4 packages so i will save $736 over the course of the next year for my $12 investment (and yes i've seen a big difference in my electric bill)...but what's the cost to our health if one of these bulbs breaks?...oh wait there is a number on the bulb for me to call

If your really worried momma, go LED or fiber optic lighting then.
If you remember right flourescents bulbs have been around a long time, schools, offices, hell I have several in my own basement. These are not really new.
do you realize there is no environmentally safe way to dispose of them?
The hazard from CFLs comes from mercury. But electricy from coal releases mercury into the atmosphere. Using a CFL instead of an incandescent reduces that mercury released into the environment.
Even if the mercury contained in a CFL was directly released into the atmosphere, an incandescent would still contribute 4.65 more milligrams of mercury into the environment over its lifetime.
If you take your CFL and dispose of it in the worst way possible, just smash it, and blow the dust with the mercury into the air, you will release *less* mercury than if you continue to use incandescent light bulbs.
Coal plants release tons of mercury into the air today. Any reduction of the use of electricity reduces that, including switching to CFLs. That mercury is released into the atmosphere. The mercury in a CFL is contained and could be recycled.
The older home heating thermostat has a mercury switch. Those switches contain about 3000 milligrams of mercury, about the same amount of mercury in 600 CFLs.
It would take many decades, perhaps centuries, for the CFLs used in that home to contain the same amount of mercury as was contained in that home's thermostat.
This is probably true for almost every home older than 20 years.
I myself will continue to use these energy savers. And safely dispose of them.
Or heres an interesting article.

All good information Tommie but I believe the EPA has already covered the disposal more thorughly than any of us can, but who covers the production and usage......
......was that Gov.com....?

Some people are reading the wrong articles.
And grandpa, if you are referring to the mini CFL's, putting the things in bags into the landifill is the best the epa can do ? come on .
All you hear anymore is of the energy crisis, and the best they have is forcing us to use these things ? As the senator said.

Not is disposal the only way, you can also recycle the mercury.
It brings a pretty price per pound.

i think that they should supply every american with a disposal container...kinda like a sharps container that u use to dispose of needles in then u put ur broken/burnt out cfl's in there then they recycle it
and the city comes around once a month or every 3 months and picks it up like they do bulk trash
brb need to test my connection here at testmy.net
all right that's what i'm talkin 'bout right thar

So uhh, how many of theses " long lasting " crappy light emitting baby killers does it take to make a pound of toxic dust again ? Thats what I thought.

Glad everyone is so willing to foot the bill for the dozens of federal orginizations that will be needed to handle everything that involved in forcing , and enforcing these eye squinting , head ache giving, non constitutional pieces of junk.
And while were all screaming about oil, and " be green " , save the earth bullS#!t, think about the repercussions of these little plastic boxes were going to need to place the illegitimate sons o' lemon heads in. The state wide, city wide, county wide hubs that will need to be paid for as well.
What about the jobs lost due to the manufacturing of what we use now, all the sockets, and transformers will not work for all applications. I for one don't have just those standard bulbs. I have many different types. So what will they do, just stop making them? What a joke !
The best part is how the arguments arise FOR these things, it really is amazing as to how easy people are to manipulate into believing anything the main stream media wants them to believe. They have worked very diligently to assure there success at mind control, and it seems they are more and more successful by the day.
