I recently bought 2GB (1GB x2) DDR2 PC2 4200 RAM from crucial.com (therefore I believe it's supposed to be compatible with my motherboard) I put one stick of RAM in and it read as 512MB. I put two in and it read as 1GB. Crucial told me to update the BIOS so I did, but with no change. :[  Help?

Mobo: ECS P4M800PRO-M (2.0)

First did you get DDR, or DDR2 ram? that board supports both?

It could be a few things. The ram could be bad, it could also be labeled wrong. Does it say 1GB on the label of the ram? And have you called them back after you updated the bios?

It is DDR2, it does say 1GB on each stick but only reads as 512MB. Yes I called them back after I updated the BIOS. They claim that it is my PC but I don't see how it would only read 512MB.

Silly question, but you do have the memory installed in the proper slots?
That mobo has 4 slots; 2 for DDR 400 and 2 for DDR 2 533.

And if they are in the proper slots does the BIOS see it as DDR 2 RAM?

They are in the correct slots because a DDR2 stick wouldn't fit in a DDR1 slot and yes the BIOS reads it as "512 MB DDR2 (533)"

It almost has to be a setting in the bios,  reset the bios to original, I would do this, then go from there.

Or the more obvious answer could be that they sent you a 1GB kit improperly labeled as a 2GB kit.

It has happened, but w/ Crucial , man, that would crush my high expectations of them.

Have you done crucials "detector "  what doe that say is in there ?

I know what you mean, but when he installed one stick he said it only showed 512MB instead of 1GB. I'd really be disappointed with Crucial if they did not accept that as a possibility and allow him to swap it for another kit.

Hey guys..
I read your topic and I've the same problem.
I'm sure that my Kingston module 1GB is, but my PC still read 512mb. I didn't reinstalled my BIOS because it is dangerous...at least I read that.
My module is a KVR533D2N4K2/1GB and I've a Fujitsu-Siemens PC, motherboard P5SD2-FM. I couldn 't find the BIOS in their website.
I'll appreciate your help. Thanks.

While it is possible to brick the mobo from updating it, its unlikely if done correctly. Especially if flashing from a USB drive which is the safest method IMO
