I know this is not related to technology at all...but if there are any Economics majors out there, please chime in.

Basically, I'm worried about getting a job.  I'm a junior in college right now, pursuing a BA in Economics, with a certification in Business Foundations (essentially a minor in Business).  I attend the University of Texas at Austin.  Originally I went to a private, liberal arts college out of state, but I ended up transferring to a college back in my hometown (realized that OOS just wasn't worth it...great experience...but not worth the extra $60,000 that it would require, especially considering I can basically go to in-state school for free if I live at home).

Now, UT Austin has a business school as well, and I was considering applying to there when I was transferring, but I decided to just stick with Economics because that's what I was doing already.  I didn't really think it would make much of a difference in the long run, but since the past few weeks I've been getting all paranoid and all (with the state of the economy, termination of many financial jobs, lay offs, etc).  I'm worried about getting a job after college (a real job, not something like a calling center or anything like that...that I could have just done right out of high school) because a lot of the types of jobs that I could have gone into (had I stayed at my previous school), are basically going to the Finance majors at UT Austin.  Some of my friends major in Finance, and it doesn't seem to be anything significantly more than an Economics major.  However, econ is in the liberal arts school at UT Austin, and thus, we don't get access to the business school (McCombs) career services, which are known to have an insane amount of resources available to students (to put it into scope, many students refer to McCombs students as "spoiled").  Accordingly, I know of many finance majors out there who have graduated and gone on to work for well known companies, making a pretty good amount of money.  However, I don't know anyone with degree's in Economics (and so, I don't really know if they too were successful or not).

I researched a little online, and a lot of sources make me think I don't really have anything to worry about, as long as I get an internship or two, and keep my grades up.

For some reason though, I feel like me transferring to UT to save money may have actually ended up screwing me over in the long run.

Anyone out there have any advice?  I'm going to speak with my adviser in the upcoming week, but I'm impatient so I want to see if I can get any other information during the weekend.  I'm somewhat spazzing out, I've pondered everything I can do.  I thought of adding pre-pharmacy to my major, but I don't think medical stuff is my thing.  I thought of doing engineering, maybe something related to mechanics, but I don't know much about it, and it's kind of late to be changing my major.  In the end I figure I just need to figure out how to make the most of my Economics major...there's gotta be a way...all these sources can't be saying that Economics is a great major for nothing.

Hi wingzero...
I can't help on your problem , being  in the UK , I was hoping  someone would chime ,
in soon ,  ? , "Basically, I'm worried about getting a job."  as you know the world is in recession , these things happen in a regular cycle , you are young enough to ride it out,
just take the best advice going ,  indeed most folk I know ended up doing something toaly unrelated to what they set out to do , , you got to ask yourself what are employers looking  for in an new recruit ?,
Basicly it's inteligence , and the ability to stick it out no matter the humble previous position, and above all to be flexible in your  outlook , maybe your first job ( call  centre ) isn't what you were looking for  but don't put it down , you will gain a lot of insight there ,one of the most difficult jobs going IMHO , ( every call is from an angry  customer )
Just my thoughts
