$40 starter plan is stated to be throttled to 256K down, which I was willing to accept considering the 26.4 I was getting with dialup; but I am getting higher rates than that.  You also only get 1 SB email address and some other limitations.  I don't need the email addreass at all, I have about 20 others, and 3 domains, so I can create as many as I need.  I was told that POP3 access was limited or blocked, but it works fine for me.

Not sure what all this means or how it compares, but I'm relatively happy for now.

Is there someplace I can see a chart of other StarBand scores?

.

.

You posted yesterday you was getting 1.4 - 2Mbps down for $40/month via SB....now your saying testmy.net is wrong or what?  The scores you just posted today (200Kbps) is about what starband advertises for that package ($49/month).... not 2Mbps. ($159/month)

or are you trying to fool yourself or other members? any basic user would be able to tell the difference without testing between 200k and 2Mbps down, quite a difference in speed!

To be truthful, I have no idea which test are more accurate than others.

I've only been on this thing for a week or two and am still learning.  The test results are posted unedited.  I can here to try and figure out what they mean.

And since I've never connected with anything other than dialup from this location, I have no idea what anything over 33K acts like.

You're sounding a bit accusatory, and I don't really know why.  This speed testing is all new to me; I just hit the "Go" button and sit back and wait for the results to appear.

Is there another speed test that you trust you think I should try?

BTW, I just did another test at DSL reports, just like the one above that showed 420 Down & 21 Up.  I can post that chart if you want.

.

And here's one from Bandwidth Place.com;

The results do vary quite a bit; I agree.  That may be due to network or server traffic.

.Here's one more from this site:

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 99.1 % faster than the average for host (178.22)

You guys are beginning to confuse me;  they all look about the same to me;

200-300 kBs down and 5 kBs up

I thought these speeds were slow, and came here to find a way to boost them, now I don't know what to think.

If you are having trouble with the tests on this site, maybe you should report it.

Now that you have posted tests from other sites now try posting results from the speed test on this site...with the same host of course.

I just modified the previous post while you were posting.

All of the tests I posted today were from the same PC, same host, same ISP, just a few minutes apart.

I'm confused on the "from this location"...could have sworn you said you used DirecWay at work? To the best of my knowledge a 2Mbps connection in Florida should be about the same if you jumped a plane to LA and used a 2Mbps, considering thats what speed they tested at when using. You should easily be able to tell without a test from 200k to 2Mbps.

As for about the same 200k and 1.7Mbps are not even close dude! Its like pedal bike compared to Corvette? So bottom line is if your getting 1.7Mbps down- 50Kbps up on a 40/month plan via Starband ...personally I would keep very quite about it.

Those speed results are pretty strange.

What's your speed when downloading a normal file? Use a program like AIDA32 or possibly StatBar to see what your current speed is, the values shown by IE and Firefox are averages and severely influenced by burst when downloading.

Edit: As some of you may have noticed, I'm pretty much inactive, but I still check threads that were reported. So as long as you people keep reporting I'm still doing my job Smile

I was correct, the 48x accounts are better at this time and this may be why. Again, you get what you pay for. Here's a post from another forum on the subject explaining Starband working with their 48x account holders to improve things.....

"They recently opend up a new subcluster on T-7 for 48x customers in an effort to get their speeds back up to where they should be.

April will be a key month.....if they don't get things stabilized by the 2nd or 3rd week then there are more serious issues involved.

Everything was going very very well right before the T-7 fiasco and the repoint hell.....so theoretically it should go back to that.

The past 3 months have been an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved."

Not true.
My 481 account right now is no better and possibly worse than a 360 account.
As for a new subcluster on T 7.
What possible benifit could be acheived from dividing the bandwidth even deeper?
Answer: None and that is just what I am seeing; progressively worse performance as more and more are crammed onto less and less bandwidth.

Unless SB adds more transponders things will only continue to degrade.

The one remaining working Ku transponder on T 7 was just acquired by Angel broadcasting; not SB.

By the way. SB is still adding new accounts and not advising the new pidgeons that there is no way in hell they can provide what they are selling.

Looks to me like the only hope for improvement I have would be for more users to quit than there are new accounts  added, thereby freeing up a bit of bandwidth for my severely restricted modem.
