With all due respect to everyone here. I have seen the sticky and it just kinda missing somethings in my humble oppinion. Feel free to delete this if you wish. Just some useful info I have taught myself the hardway. Reloading xp lots
Checking for Virus.
1.Option for Xp. Scan in safe mode with networking.Reboot windows and hit f8. Will take some time. Scanning in safe mode will disable things that virus and or spyware may be hiding in and scanners may miss.
2.In xp disable system restore while scanning. Right Click on my computer icon on desk top. Go to properties then click on System restore and check box to disable system restore. After scanning repeat previous steps to turn back on system restore.
3.Remember scanning in safe mode is an option to try. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, scan for virus and spyware with windows normally. Make sure everything is closed including your browser.
4. If your still unable to find virus or spyware but still think their may be a problem you can run hijack this. Make sure when you download hijack this and unzip it DO NOT run directly from desktop or the unzipped folder. HiJack This is a very powerful tool. Before using make sure your at ease doing so and ask in the general forum ANY questions you may have!! There is no such thing as a dumb question. ASK!!!!!!!
Below are links to free anti virus and spyware tools. I will include links to hijack this and 2 sites that will read the logs automatically and they are free. IMPORTANT!!! Before using hijack this MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING!!! WHEN IN DOUBT ASK!!!!! No such thing as a dumb question. Also provided are 2 free tools that may help. Starup inspector will detect any virus or spyware when your computer starts. Just hit the consult button at the top. Update your program just before you run it. One last suggestion.Go to your desktop right click and create new folder. Name it as you wish and put all spyware and anti virus programs in this folder. Also when using winzip go to start..search...search for unzipped......See the folder that says unzipped. Put a shortcut to this folder on your desktop by right click on the folder and send shortcut to desktop. Makes finding unzipped programs a snap
Also included is a link for net meter. Its free. Simply run it while connected to the net and not browsing. See if your getting allot of stuff leaving your computer.
Links for Startup Inspector and Net Meter.

Not only do you want to get into safe mode (Windows XP option for safe mode with networking should be applied)
If a virus is found system restore points should be deleted.

If a virus is found system restore points should be deleted.
Disabling System Restore, as the OP advised at #2, automatically deletes saved Restore Points
Remember to turn "System Restore" back on afterwards !

...
...
...
,
til I decided to ask),
DING! ahhhhh,...Now that I read this
,,, "Where did I skip this chapter
, or was it a missin page in the tweaking bible").
Great Post!!!

ATTENTION!!! ATTENTION!!!
I recently stumbled upon a program that accelerated my internet speed BIGTIME. I tried cablenut, but it only sped up my connection to about 2800 when I'm supposed to be getting 4000. Well, after doing the internet adjustments from the programs, it fixed all the errors I caused and I came out with these results:
::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 3854 Kbps about 3.9 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)
Download Speed is:: 470 kB/s
Tested From::
http://testmy.net/
(server2)
Test Time:: Tue Jul 19 2005 06:31:24 GMT-0500 (Central Daylight Time)
Bottom Line:: 69X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.18 sec
Diagnosis: Looks Great : 17.86 % faster than the average for host (Cox.net)
Validation Link::
http://testmy.net/stats/id-3ELYK65HR
The program that did this was TuneUp Utilities 2004. It's the best internet tweak I've ever had. I ADVISE EVERYONE WHO HAS A SLUGGISH INTERNET TO GET THIS NOW! You can get it here
http://www.download.com/TuneUp-Utilities/3000-2086_4-10280149.html?tag=lst-0-1
. This is a very helpful program.

hey Tarmgar
Im glad your speed is faster with that program, but my guess is that its just a coincidence... a 4 Mbps connection like yours will go fast with their tweak, atleast downstream cos they dosent tweak upload at all.. Lemme explain abit more
I downloaded that program and it cleaned up alot in my pc, but when it comes to TCP tweaking they have no clue...
1. The developers of that program have no idea what windows scaling is
2. They have no idea what MTU diffrent connection types has, they set Cable and LAN to 1492 in the network adapters, but leave pathMTU detection enabled... ( for the record 1492 is used by DSL and FIOS over PPPoE)
3. They dosent tweak upload
4. "License: Free to try; $39.99 to buy" ill attach a cablenut file that use their settings for cable, and its free ;)
Make sure to
backup whole registry
before using that program, unless you know what your doing
