I decided that it was time-out time. 

As I stepped inside Paulo's Bar, I knew at once that something was amiss; I could smell it in the air.  There was the stale scents of cigarette smoke and spilled beer on the carpet, but wafting through came the smell of fear and anxiety.  There was somebody in here who wasn't pleased to see me.

My heart jumped, and I glanced around at the faces, trying not to linger long on anyone.  Mostly drunks--half-closed, sleepy-eyed, vacant expressions--but there was one man who did not look to meet my gaze.  He sat in the corner booth, his wide-brimmed fedora casting a shadow over his face so that I could not read his expression.  There was nothing on the table; he was not here to drink.

Slowly he looked up and his cold eyes met mine.  His lips twitched, tickling a tiny smirk, and all activity in the bar stopped for a tense moment.  Finally he spoke. 

"You shoulda done me in when you hadda' chance.  Now you gon' meet yo' demise by my hand."  Then he brandished two barrels of a short, sawed-off shotgun, pointed it straight at me, and pulled both triggers.
