  On the average I get about 2800 down & 230 up...  Check and make sure your not on the TV special they ran around Christmas..  It is worse than dialup!!There is a Mediacom service rep in the dslrports form...  Name is Scooter I think. Wish one of the reps would join here.. :whaa:

I am on the Mediacom 5Mbits connection and here is a speed test I just ran:

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 4655 Kbps about 4.7 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)
Download Speed is:: 568 kB/s
Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/
Test Time:: Sat Mar 19 07:29:11 CST 2005
Bottom Line:: 83X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.8 sec
Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 109.87 % faster than the average for host (mchsi.com)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-V2I6UZYXW

Not sure why you say they are S#!tty as I just moved to Alabama from EL Paso, TX and the Roadrunner out there sucked.  Mediacom here in North Alabama is fast as hell and the service I get from them is outstanding.  Must depend on where you are and who you are dealing with...

Mediacom doesn't suck... it just that they are behind on technology HERE a bit... they will be updating very shortly... like in the next two months.

They have a special just for gamers. Has 5 mbits. Not too shabby.

I agree they are a fairly crappy IsP.  they have 3mps down and 256Kbs up.  the only thing this si good for is downloading. don't try to play any online games because you will get kicked for high ping and xbox and ps2 online play is choppy.  I found quest dsl is better for my area 1500 down 768 up

I had roadrunner a couple years ago in minneapolis mn. I had one of the old 3com modems and with a few registery tweaks I was running just over 4MB they kept tring to get me to bring the old 3com in and get the new toshiba modems they said it would be even faster but I new a couple people that had the toshiba modem and they where lucky to get 2 megs and one of them lived in the same town house complex as I did so I just kept telling them no thanks I am happy with what I have

Mediacom sucks only because they are using outdated equipment that corporate wont update because of money.  And the speeds prove it.

::::::::::.. Download Stats ..::::::::::
Connection is:: 2555 Kbps about 2.6 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)
Download Speed is:: 312 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net/ (server2)
Test Time:: Fri Jul 22 14:04:40 CDT 2005
Bottom Line:: 46X faster than 56K 1MB download in 3.28 sec
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 68.44 % of your hosts average (mchsi.com)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-PFWGIUA95

This is the result of poor equipment.  So although some of you may get better results Mediacom has skimped paying out $ in some markets and when their cable contract comes time to be renewed they will be in for a good amount of trouble. Not to mention when voip comes to your neighborhood you will then see the problems coming out of the wood work.

I am in Springfield, MO and I get great Download speed and great upload speed. I just wish the Upstream was more like 512 or 786 256 is practically stone age. But hey I got the 1st mo free and only pay 29.95 after that. I called to ask if they had faster plans and I was told that there are Beta testers out there with 10/1, I'd sure like to be in that group. Also there is a new "gamers" package in development that will boast more upstream speed.

A field tech said that Mediacom will probably never give us more upload as it may induce people to run servers.  Dont know how true that is but he is a head field tech.  I wont pay no $75 for 10,000 when they cant even give us close to 5000 now.

Came to this forum for help.  Just moved to FL from NM (Comcast High-Speed).  My connection speeds are way down (less than 1Mbps).  I keep getting kicked from servers in BF2, and constant CIs (connection interrupted) during JO.  I haven't changed any settings on my comp yet.  Went from a motorolla cable modem with a Linksys Wireless Router to now just having a Linksys Cable Modem.  Any hints or tips on getting a lot more out of my connection would be greatly appreciated.  I built my own comp, so I understand hardware.  I have it tweaked for gaming, but I am pretty much clueless on internet connections.

You didn't specify your modem....But I have found getting an updated modem like a Motorola Surfboard sb5120 my speeds went up!  If your running windows XP you shouldnt mess with any rwin settings....XP is set to handle all this for you.  If your speeds are still sucking call for a tech to come out and check things.  Make sure you request a field tech with equipment, to test your line with a lap top and a modem...
Also look at your signal strenght for your modem and post all the results.. Upstream and downstream as well as SNR

Not sure how to do that with your modem....You may have the info in your manual which I believe may be on a CD with that modem.  Otherwise you can call Linksys to find out how to do that at this number...1-800-326-7114

Just tell them that you want to check your Downstream Signal and noise ratio as well as your upstream power level and downstram  recieve power level.

When you get these results post them here and I will take a look and tell you if its Mediacom that is causing you problems.

Thanks..

Thanks Soul, but I think I got it.  Had to turn down the application protection on Zone Alarm.  I really find it hard to believe that this was the problem, but the above stats say it all.  I will, however, keep you in mind if I get any further problems.  Thanks so much for the offer to help!

This is typically bad.  On a good night I'll get around 200kb down and about 200 ping, my worst night the ping to my default gateway was 900ms.  Mediacom just announced speeds up to 5MEG!
My Power level was at about 15 so the cable guy put a spliter on it to lower it down to closer to 0 which he said was supposed to be better.. Dunno if he was BSing me or what but he said all my equipment/signal is top notch and that they are having problems with traffic and are "splitting nodes" to try and catch up.

Mediacom has nothing to say other than "we are working on it, no ETA".  I'm about ready to order DSL but I figure they'll fix it by the time I can get it installed.

That's my biggest complaint right now is their lack of "enthusiasm".  Not only did the guy not explain to me that they would be doing upgrades (I signed up for the cable internet 2 days before they started), but the IT guys keep giving me the "they are upgrading the system, and I don't know when they will be done."  What the hell kind of IT guy is that.  Furthermore, there is no mention of the changes anywhere on their website.  Did they really expect me not to notice my service dropping every 30 minutes?  Anyway, as far as I am concerned, they are the only game in town, so I am stuck with them (I will never go with DSL, satellite, or dial-up again).  Guess I'm stuck with crappy customer support.  I can only hope the upgrades will actually improve my scores.

Well you power levels are great.  And your snr is too. 37 is very good...should be 30 or higher. A power level of 1 is fantastic anywhere from -2 DbMV to +2 DbMV is fantastic....You dont want anything above -15 to +15

I want you to do 2 things.
You have some packet loss and your ping times seem way out of line.  Call Mediacom tech support...AND follow my advice to the letter. Call 1-877-387-8087... Follow the prompts. When you get through...Ask to speak to a tier 2 tech. Don't let the gentleman or woman say to u maybe I can help...They cant.... They wont have the tools or knowledge.

Once you get to the tier 2 support explain your high pings and packet loss.

Have them recheck your power and SNR levels...BUT this time ASK him to check the UPSTREAM SNR on the UBR.  It should be above 20.  I repeat this SNR can not be seen by you, it has to be sensed by Mediacom and the first level techs dont even understand what your asking. Sometimes the tier 2 techs wont either. so explain just like I wrote it down...Tell them YOu dont want them to check the Downstream SNR that you can do yourself by looking at your modem stats..You want them to check the Upstream SNR that is at the UBR.

Then when he is done telling you that.
Ask him how many people are on your node.
If its over 240 that is NOT good. Capacity I think is around 260...but it takes alot of work to split nodes so they dont do that very often.

Have them run a test for packet loss to your modem...

Mediacom has a new thing in affect, probable thanks to me LOL  After a 3rd call comes in within 30days for a repair and its still not fixed...they will send a line tech out...

Hope all this helps....

SC
Thanks for the advice, I'll call in but I guess I didn't make it clear that they already sent a line tech out already.  Originally there was not a splitter installed and the power was close to 15, but the system was working fine before, for about a month and a half.  Once the splitter was put on it now hovers around 0 or 1.

The technician basically said everyone in my area was getting crap and that technically I'm lucky cause some poeple have nada for connectivity.  The packet loss test was done by the initial phone tech support and that is what got them to send a guy out.  I'll see if I can find out about the upstream SNR but from what the tech said they were doing down at one of the main junctions he doubted anythign would improve for about 2 weeks or so.
