Don't Upgrade to DW6000
«

June 21, 2005, 06:42:19 PM »
I recently upgraded to the DW6000 from the DW4000 with D-Way. Latest modem, two free months to cover the cost, no brainer, right? Biggest mistake I ever made. My downloads dropped from an average of 1000 Kbps with the 4000 to about 400 Kbps, maybe lower. At the moment I am running at

I have been on the phone with "advanced technical support" and they tell me averything is fine. I've been trying to get someone at dway to help me reverse this upgrade and go back to the DW4000 and I have been passed back and forth from support to billing to customer service to sales and finally left on hold. I was even hung up on once. What a nightmare, worst experience I have ever had with a support/service problem. Trying to speak to someone by phone at Dway who can give you a straight answer is hopeless. If anybody is thinkling of upgrading, don't do it! I'm calling the cable provider tomorrow.

Buzz,
Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try. I've already run the configuration tool but I'll run again with you settings. I'm running WinXP HomeEd, not PRO. Safe to run?

It should be, but remove all cablenut and TCP optimizer tweaks first.....and just follow the directions in the readme file no tools needed to do the tweaks.....the first one is from Dway the LCCU file needs to be done first then just double click on the .reg file and it will edit you registry for you.....this file came from [this.site.has.been.blocked.for.spamming]
Good Luck
Let me know if you get any improvements!

This is virtually the same as just prior to running your tip. Thanks for the concern. I received a call from Dway acknowledging a problem and one of their engineers is to call to change some settings. Won't happen to next week, I'll try to post results of their efforts, if they follow through.

You must make sure your internet connection settings are as follows. In LAN settings make sure both boxes are checked in proxy server and neither box is checked in automatic connections then click on advanced button. In proxy address you need to have 192.168.0.1 Port 87. In the exceptions you need to type DirecWaysupport.com;192.168.0.1.
At this point I strongly suggest about three different brands of Spyware removal & detection. WEBROOT seems the most thorough the second after that is XOFTSPY. MSN now offers one too. No mater the brand one will not locate and destroy all spyware. The next thing to consider is a Windows registry program. Finally I would make sure you have a good Window Washer. All this helps keep your computer clean and operating at optimum speeds.

I get these numbers pretty consistently on XP Home (with Windows Firewall turned on) using DW6000 on a 5-year old computer after running LCCU and TCP optimizer ONCE. I also have Norton Antivirus and update/run Spywareblaster, Ad-Aware, and SpyBot (all free downloads) weekly. You should be able to duplicate or exceed these numbers. Otherwise, it seems to me that something in your setup isn't right.

Speed in the 900's doesn't sound bad for a 5 year old computer with XP... It is likely your computer is using 32 bits XP needs 64 bits and if it doesn't have it it robs from your hard drive. In addition with that age your memory chips are likely 133 instead of 266 and the first thing a computer does is slow down to avoid crashing.
For less than $500 you can build a damn fine computer with technology about 6 months behind todays items on the shelf..

I updated to 6000. I AM VERY UNHAPPY! I am uploading at 23.68 % and downloading at 36.42%.
Advanced tech support tells me not to use this site to check speed. Only DirecWay's speed tester. They always tell me I am with in the standard. I am really PO'ED because my 4000 system was much faster. I live in a remote area and have no other option than dway. They told me I could upgrade to a Pro system which would be more money but faster. When I got dway a couple of yrs ago they told me the upload would be 128 in a year. Now no one knows anything about it. Dway advertises speed 50 X faster than 56K I think dway has a technical problem and they don't know how to solve it. I hate talking to people who speak poor english most of the time..
I have talked to Microsoft's tech support in India and they are great!

Whoever you talked to in tech support was full of S#!t.... I have always had a download speed of over 1100 kps as measured by this site and 750+ measured by DirecWay, the upload speeds measured by both have been around 56K which is a known as far as the upload speed. Here are a couple of things you need to try....
Go to your internet options and click connections, then click on LAN settings. After that uncheck automatic settings and in the proxy server bos check both blocks, then open avanced settings and type in 192.168.0.1 in the proxy address box type in the number 87 in the port box, then in exceptions type in localhost;192.168.0.1.
Once you have done this you should run at least two or more spyware search and destroy programs. At the mimimum you need to open your local folder and delete all files in your temporay internet folder then run defrag...

Just want to let you know, I followed the advice from "Tucson960". I have a DirecWay 6000 and I have never been able to download, using TestMynet, over about 85. I followed his directions, and immediately I now get about 120 to 130 on the download test. I have tried everything for the past couple of weeks, and nothing else helped. I thought I knew a lot, but you have helped tremendously. Thank you very much.

You are welcome, Keep in mind you need a signal strength of at least 60 from your dish... Also make sure you are up to date on your DW6000 software, go to my DirecWay and download LCCU_4.0.3.12...

I just cancelled my Internet service with DirecWay today. I had been with them almost two years. I went with the cable company, which is getting me about 900 Kbps, which was the fastest DW ever ran. Most of the time, DW ran about 4 to 600 Kbps. The signal strength was 91 or better all the time. I went all the way up the latter to the corporate offices at Hughes, and landed in corporate systems analysist. They tried every trick in the book, including replacing the 6K modem. Never got any better. No tricks or tweaks that were not supplied by Hughes.
I was running about 1100 Kbps or so with the DW4000 and should have stayed with it. The DW6000 is a piece of S%&t. Now at least, I'm dealing with a smaller company, with their main service office about 200 miles up the road. It is only $20.00 a month less than DW, but still have a static IP, and router use. It beats the $89.99 a month DW was charging. I'll let you know later if I still am satisified in a month or so.

php.
xp is the successor of nt, and hence a 64 bit operating system. it uses 64 bit bytes instead of the older 32 bit bytes. if you don't have a 64 bit capable mobo, hd, ram etc, the os will cache the upper half of every byte in the swapfile. that's why it's called a swapfile. it swaps between the upper and lower half so the os can deal with the complete bytes.
that's what he meant by that post regarding the older comp i think.

I see...
XP comes in 32 and 64 bit editions... the pagefile is there because most computers don't have enough memory capacity to hold everything open...
