To oc, get good, low latency memory, and increase you FSB in small increments until you can't make it to the desktop anymore. That will be you limit. Lower the FSB a few notches and you should be fine. You may need to increase your chipset, cpu, memory, or agp voltage.
Be sure to have adequate cooling (case & cpu).
Good luck.

If you are running a prescott cpu I am going to seriously recommend that you replace the heatsink before you even begin.. these chips run hot by themselves.. much less when you start to overclock them.

That would be the chip name.. Intel Pentium 4 prescott.. it is the name for the fab they used... they are know to run very hot!

You will need to have that option within your bios.
From the main menu, choose the correct option that takes you to the ocing selections.
On my particular board, from the main menu, the "
Genie Bios
" option takes me there. (
See Pictures
)
I suggest that you download
Everest Home 2.01 (click me)
and check out your temps. As
Swimmer
advised, you will need to find out the name of you cpu's core. Again, open
Everest
, browse to the first option under Motherboard once it's been expanded (which is
CPU
).
CPU Alias
is what you're looking for.
Do a
Google
search for your processor and find out how well others have overclocked that particular core. This will give you an idea of what limitations you may come up against.

By the way, that only means that your motherboard can support Intel processors up to that speed. It doesn't mean that you can overclock your processor to that extent.

If you have a prebuilt system (Compaq, Dell, HP), you may want to try different keys.
Instead of pressing the "DEL" key, try the "Delete" key (under the Insert key). I have a Compaq here that I'm working on, and to get into the Bios, that's the key that I have to press.
I had to press F2 on a Dell system on a few occasions.
Just mix it up with the Function keys, and mabey try holding control (CTRL).
Let us know if you get in. I don't know if Compaq can lock you out of your own system.

Organ_shifter, i tried all the F keys (1-12) and the delete key and it doesn't work..guess im just about to try the Del key..brb
EDIT: holding ctrl or pressing Del ddint work either..wtf >_<
EDIT2: If i could overclock this computer i would, it's kinda old allready ( i would just save the RAM!)
and if it'd F#@& up, i'd have a good excuse for my mommy to get me a new one haha

Motherboard (120 F)
CPU (133 F)
Seagate harddrive (118 F)
Intel's cores generally run hotter than the ones offered by AMD.
To be on the safe side,
invest in some high end cooling
. That will give you peace of mind when juicing up the FSB.
Sometimes, temps can be reported wrong with the default bios. My temps use to be terrible until I read on the manufacturer's website about how the most recent bios corrects the temperature flaw. I flashed it and everything has been great ever since.
That doesn't mean you're have the same issue, but anything is possible. When ocing, you have to be willing to accept the good with the bad.
Manufacturers don't recommend ocing at all, so everything is at your own risk.

I don't know man. Systems are so damn strange sometimes.
Mabey Compaq did pull a fast one.
What is the make/model of your motherboard/cpu? Everest will help you detect that.

My motherboard says
Manufacturer: Compaq
Model: 0784h
and my CPU is Intel Pentium 4 1.6GHz running at 1595 MHz
is that what you needed to know?
Also, my EVEREST says that my BIOS type is Compaq and manufacturer is Hawlett-Packard

OK. Here is the page for everything you need for that system. (update wise)
Compaq Presario 5423US Desktop PC
You should update only the things that you think can be improved.
The latest bios is under the "ROMPaq" section. I think both links offer the bios rom and the flash utility that's used to apply the new bios.
Caution
:
Flashing your bios is not a casual thing to do. A bad flash can result in you system being completely dead. Bios recovery steps don't always work, so read everything you need to know before attempting a flash.

Thanks organ_shifter
Very welcome.
Please thoroughly read all you can before flashing. Don't just give it a once over scan. I just had a bad flash earlier this year. I killed my MSI MB (
Seen Here
). That's why I upgraded my motherboard. That MSI board was great too.
The floopy decided that it wanted to become unreadable half way through the flash. I tried it over & over again, but the floppy wouldn't read. I was stuck at the flashing utility menu. I knew that once I restarted the PC that it wouldn't boot back up. Running Autoexec.exe from a Windows 98SE bootdisk wouldn't get me into dos either. It was a wrap.
Be careful.

like newer newer hp's. That may work on my media center, will that take me into the menu where I can oc? ;)
edit: OK, at the driver update page, there is a BIOS update (I think I already have this one) and here's what it tells me..and I have a pretty new HP considering everything!
Quote:
"9. Press and hold F1 for a few seconds to open the BIOS Setup.
10. Press F5 for a few seconds, choose YES, and then press Enter to load the BIOS defaults. (Use the arrow keys to choose YES, if necessary.)
11. Press F10 for a few seconds, choose YES, and then press Enter to exit the BIOS Setup and save your changes. (Use the arrow keys to choose YES, if necessary.)
12. Press Enter to confirm the save.
13. If you see a System Settings Change message prompting you to restart your PC, click YES to restart the PC again."
Just thought that might help, organ...
