Since last Friday, thats 6 days now, upload has been almost useless for >5k. There are a few folks at dslreports.com discussing it. Are there any State College users here having problems?

Well - Your comment is puzzeling. I'm in a college town, but not at a college. The university is its own ISP with its own T1 links. Adelphia offers no service to the university. Also, I can certianly tell the difference between congestion and a problem. Seems there was an area wide problem that has now been fixed. It is still kind of amazing that 6 days into it, there was no recognition by Adelphia that it was an area problem - for example some techs were telling folks to reinstall Windows.

Well, deb193, your Adelphia experience seems chillingly familiar.  Yeah, I've seen folks post glowing accolades for Adelphia, but your experience squares with mine.  As you may have learned, Adelphia has a three-tier service system, not counting the customers' tears.  The first tier contains the people customers talk to or write to when they first pose a problem to Adelphia.  These folks don't know very much and don't have resources to fix a problem if they knew what it was.  The next tier of people know a lot more than first-tier people, have tools and methods to research and correct problems, but usually can't.  Finally, there are the third-tier people (apparently system engineers) who probably know a great deal and can and do fix problems.  However, only second-tier people can pass information to the third-tier people, and those people don't tell customers nor lower-tier people anything.  Consequently, problems get fixed by customers finally figuring out what's wrong with their equipment or third-tier people eventually figuring out what's wrong with the Adelphia system.  Of course, sometimes there's nothing "wrong" with the Adelphia system; it's just being upgraded or something.

By the way, re-installing Windows is sometimes not a bad suggestion, particularly for new customers who've never had cable Internet before.  If nothing else, reinstalling Windows and arriving at a clean machine at least enables the customer to defeat Aldelphia's service people from claiming the problem is with the customer's computer.  However, instead of rebuilding one's hard drive, it helps if a second hard drive can be built with only freshly installed Windows and just enough other software to get connected to the Internet and block viruses and spyware.
