I have Adelphia's Preferred service, which has an advertised top download speed of 4 Mbps.  When I run a download speed test, I typically get a result similar to the following one I just got.

Hmmm, I hoped I could copy all the graphics contained in the result but no dice.  Anyway, please note the result states I was getting a speed that's "9.08 % faster than the average for host (adelphia.net)" and that my result "Looks Great".  Also, I sometimes read on this forum that Adelphia "rocks" or some other praise.  However, if my download speed is 3892 Kbps, which is less than the advertised speed, and it's 9.08 % faster than the average Adelphia download speed, there must be a ton of customers who are getting way less than the advertised download speed.  So, how can Adelphia be thought of as great or rocking?

your score is fine. almost right on your cap. its just some people have problems with their service or have a problem with their computer and they run d/l tests and bring the average down a little. its not a big deal, your only 9% faster than the hosts average anyway.

the average is lower because adelphia used to offer 3.0 tops, they upgraded some areas as far as 5 or even more, not sure how high, so the average is slowly climbing. all tests from adelphia are figured in, including those from yesteryear, which is why the average does not truly reflect the current average.

The Premier service offered in this area has a top, advertised, downloading speed of 6000 Kbps, which some of my friends come close to getting.  However, I have one friend with the Preferred service, which is what I have, and he gets downloading speeds around 5000 Kbps.  I wonder how he gets far more than the advertised speed.  His speed is really great if the average is around 3500 Kbps.

If I had the Premier service and got around 5500 Kbps, would the test results still show the average to be around 3500 Kbps?  And, would the comment be "Awesome" because the speed is much higher than the average even though it's less than the advertised speed?

I'm not complaining about my downloading speed.  I'm merely noting the average downloading speed is less than 4000 Kbps (Preferred service), which means the overall system doesn't "rock" at an average of 3500 Kbps.  Further, if folks with the 6000 Kbps service are included in the average, some customers must be fairly slow to bring the average down to 3500 Kbps.  I also wonder how the average will be or is affected by the 16-Mbps Extreme service.

Somehow, I feel the test should compare apples with apples.  That is, 4000 might be compared with 3500 Kbps but 6000 Kbps or 16 Mbps shouldn't.

since the host will likely identify itself as adelphia.net for all flavors of service, they will all be lumped together.

post it in make testmynet better. but then how do you tell automatically what package the person is on? answer that and you might just get your wish. it's just not as easy as it looks.

You're probably right that creating a testing system that provides results in accordance with each service (package) isn't easy.  However, if there were a test for each service, the user could select which test to use.  Perhaps, each test would compare the user's speed with the advertised speed.  Isn't that the crux of the issue?  If I'm paying for speed X, I want to get somewhere close to that speed, or I'm an unhappy camper.  The average network speed could still be measured and stated for what it's worth.

You're probably right.  I even thought about having the software collect and average the speed results by type of service.  Then, the results of each test could be compared against average peer results.  However, like you, I then thought people would screw around and corrupt the system and discarded the idea.  Still, I think comparing results against the average speed of the network and stating the results to be "Awesome" or whatever is not particularly helpful.  Someone knowing his/her downloading and uploading speeds relative to the advertised speeds of their service is helpful.

Anyway, this entire line of discussion has drifted far away from what I was originally trying to say.  I was attempting to take issue with people who state Adelphia "rocks" or some other superlative.  I would think Adelphia rocks if the entire network was capable of average downloading speeds near 16 Mbps.  Apparently, the network is only capable of average downloading speeds around 3.5 Mbps, which probably means many customers are getting far less than they're entitled.  In addition, Adelphia's customer-support service leaves a lot to be desired.  That said, after a protracted and frustrating fight with Adelphia back in April after I first subscribed to their Preferred service, I finally got the speed I'm buying.  To be fair, some of the problem was with my system, but the majority of the problem was with Adelphia's system.  No worthwhile help came from Adelphia until I threatened to complain to the FCC.  Two days later, I got the proper speed, which, of course, may or may not have been a coincidence.  Because Adelphia's third-tier support doesn't talk to tiers 2 and 1 nor to customers, I'll probably never know what was fixed.
