how do u know i have a virus
. . .not sure I understand your question ~ but if you don't have any Anti-Virus programs installed on your computer ~ try running some of the FREE on-line Virus scanners I mentioned in "FREE Tools".  I've found Avast to be a great FREE Anti-Virus program.

how do u know i have a virus
because i am the all knowing all seeing master of this mortal coil?

but seriously. if you don't know why i know, or how i know, and i don't, then i can at least make an educated guess and say that due to you not knowing how i would know you probably have things running on your comp that aren't supposed to be running there. from viruses to trojans to all kinds of other unsavory things.

ROM-DOS
*** Advanced Tweaks [not  for Gamers only] ***
Quote

Thank you for sharing all these information with us.
I would like to ask you though, when you wrote (not for Gamers only) did you meant NOTE: This is for GAMERS ONLY?
Or did you meant to say that this is NOT for Gamers ONLY but it is for everyone.
People like me(newbie and English is not my first lang) can get confused.
Also these tweaking are they for all OS? If not then which one is and which one is not.
I followed your instruction on how to Create a new  hardware profile on my win98 and when i restarted my PC i choose new profile but it won't load. I even tried my original profile and it didn't work either. Basically it was a blank black screen.
Through safe mode I managed to go to system device only to see that everything on there was doubled and trippled Smile
I had to remove and reinstall most of the things Smile. Finally after 2 days I managed to bring my PC back and on the internet.
Again maybe it was my PC not accepting new hardware profile or maybe it doesn't work on win98 SE but this is what happened to me.(just in case someone tries with win98SE).
Thanks again for your info.

flag ~ I'm sorry ~ most of these tweaks are intended for Windows XP users, but you might want to PM Cholla and ask him what he thinks before you try anything here ~ Cholla is running Windows ME and he might be able to help with earlier versons of Windows tweaks.
[It's been so long since I used an earlier version of Windows ~ I can't really remember if you could set up Hardware Profiles?] . . .but, you do have to do certain things in order (and re-boot) for Windows to understand what your doing.

*** Advanced Tweaks [not  for Gamers only] ***  are things anyone  can do (or try), it's that most gamers like to have the least amount of programs running in the background.
What I did was partition my hard drive into three seperate drives. One for the family - C:\, one for backup stuff - D:\, and one for me and my on-line gaming - E:\.  I'm able to dual-boot either to C:\ drive or E:\ drive ~ I've installed Windows XP twice ~ one on each drive.  Which I'll explain to folks at some future time and why.
{. . .it's kinda ironic ~ I have copies of Windows 98 and Windows Me stored on my D:\ drive -uninstalled ~ for friends that need earlier versions.}
Thanks for the heads up, though ~ I'll add a note: For Windows XP users.  ~ sorry  Embarassed

it's ok ROM, I tweaked my teachers laptop (just the performance settings though) to best performance, but kept the bottom bar (the XP style) and the icon shadows, and now the right-click is instantaneous!! SO YAY!!  Very Happy Thanks again man!  Smile

Everyone: NOTE--After doing all the recommended things that ROM has listed here, I restarted my computer and it crashed, taking all my pictures, email, documents, and Windows down with it..  Confused Neutral These are complete crap people, don't do them..

HAHA!!! I had you all goin for a second there!  :haha:

Ok, seriously:
NOTE--I did everything he has said here, and I even added in some registry values that were not there (probably about 5 or 6 of them). I am happy to report that I restarted and everything worked great, and I started Free Ram XP Pro..whcih is a big no-no...well, not really, but it DRASTICALLY slowed things down. If you are running such a program (Optimize Memory, F.R.XP.P, etc.) please report to me/ROM on this thread and let us know if you get the same results...please. This is actually pretty interesting, if you do all the stuff recommended.

Oh yea, and I haven't even done the Services again yet (had to re-install OS), and Firefox (Beta RC3) starts up in 2.3 seconds flat. With a google homepage. So, I can yet again vouch for this guy...ROM-DOS knows what he's doin'!  Very Happy

Thanks again man... Razz  cool Sorry about the beginning of that post.. evil6
